BTV with Vista: Deinterlacing problems

ok, I have a rear projection crt HDTV that I use as my secondary monitor to watch beyond tv on. It automatically deinterlaced tv signals.

When I watch BTV recorded MPEG shows on my tv, (standard def tv show, playback settings: deinterlace off) whenever something moves, I see interlace glitches along the edge of the object, you know scan lines. Its very aggravating.

So I turn on hardware deinterlacing in BTV and when I watch the show it scanline problems are gone but the picture looks all "smeary" and blurry. and when object move quickly instead of scan lines I get what look like ghost outlines trailing the object Like O)))

When I watch the same recording in Media Center, it looks fine.

I actually had the same problem in XP, but I changed the playback codec from the snapstream one to Intervideo (which I had on my system) and it fixed the problem. I could watch my shows with deinterlacing turned off in btv and they would look fine.

But now under Vista, no matter what codec I try I get the same problem. The intervideo codec doesnt help. Or it may be the upgrade to BTV 4.7 (I had 4.6 on the machine when it had xp on it)

I also tried fiddling with the graphic card setting (ati radeon 1800xl) but nothing made a difference there either.

Anyone have any ideas? Or know of a way to use the media center mpeg decoder in btv? because the videos look great in media center. I would just watch them all in there except it has no commercial skip.

Right now my only recourse is to showsqueeze everything. If I showsqueeze to divx or wmv, it deinterlaces the video and the playback looks fine. Its just real time consuming.

Re: BTV with Vista: Deinterlacing problems

Vista bad. Vista very bad.

Seriously, I've had no luck with it and BTV. I don't consider it a BTV problem, just a new, unstable OS.

Re: BTV with Vista: Deinterlacing problems

actually I have had no problems with vista or btv under vista other than this one. It seems more stable than xp was, I was having all sorts of crashes under xp, thats why I finally gave in and installed vista.

Re: BTV with Vista: Deinterlacing problems

ok I think I may have found a solution myself. I am still testing it.

I downloaded the K-Lite Mpeg codec pack:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multime...PEG-Pack.shtml

and installed the various codecs. you can only install one at a time so it took a lot of messing with.

I finally tried the Intervideo Codec. after you choose it, it asks if you want to install the hardware acceleration or not (check box) - first I said yes, and everything looked the same, interlace artifacts. then I uninstalled it and reinstalled it withOUT the hardware accel.

Everything looks great now. I don't have the hardware deinterlacing turned on in btv playback settings and I have no motion artifacts.

My current settings under play back:

Intervideo Video Decoder [no hardware accel]
Snapstream Audio decoder
3D accelerated
NONE for Deinterlacing

Unless I post back here with bad new, everything seems to be working fine (just did it about 15 min ago so I am still crossing my fingers. )

Re: BTV with Vista: Deinterlacing problems

just reporting back that the solution I found is still working. Looks like this might be a solution to a lot of the deinterlacing problems I saw others having when I searched the forum.
