Fully Automatic Commercial Skip?

My wife and I have enjoyed fully automatic commercial skip with our ReplayTV 5000 Series boxes. It's not perfect all the time. With ReplayTV being analog SD and no longer being developed, I've turned to BTV for a more modern answer to recording TV, both analog SD and digital HD. BTV works pretty well. It's much more stable than ReplayTV, though it lacks some of ReplayTV's features. The most important missing feature is fully automatic commercial skipping. We all know this feature could be in BTV, but the TV and movie executives would put SnapStream out of business if it was included by SnapSteam.

I have been researching how to add this missing feature to BTV via some plug-in or other add-on. I have read some postings that claim it's been done with this or that add-on, but the details never follow through. What I do read about involves manual post processing. I have not found a discussion anywhere that talks about adding in fully automatic commercial skipping that is as integrating as the standard BTV SmartSkip which requires a button press on the remote.

Have I just missed it? Did I not look deep enough? Suggestions . . . .

Bye.

Re: Fully Automatic Commercial Skip?

I don't think it's possible.

But there are some workarounds. I use automatic videoredo to cut out commercials. It will reduce the 1 hour recording to 42 minutes. Check out

Step by Step: Video fixing, Commercial Detection, and Removal.

If I read correctly, you are looking for a plugin/setting that uses the smartskip to automatically jump commercials without a button press. But I am not sure why you would want it. Sage can do it but it is the first thing I turned off because a false positive causes it to jump over sections of the show.

Re: Fully Automatic Commercial Skip?

My wife wants it for her daily workouts. She spends about an hour using her eliptical trainer and her stationary bicycle. She will start watching something on one of her ReplayTV boxes with Commercial Advance engaged. She's willing to suffer with the inacurracies, as long as it's mostly right. Myself, I find the BTV SmartSkip OK as is. It's not as good as ReplayTV Commercial Advance, but that's not the point.

So, it looks like I may have to continue with her Microsoft MediaCenter experiement. There is a plug-in that gives fully automatic commercial skip to MCE. I really don't like MCE very much.

Bye.

Re: Fully Automatic Commercial Skip?

This looks daunting, but may do what I want. I'll look into it.

Thanks,

Bye.

The smart ass in me sees this dialog:

Honey, since your workout is 1 hour and the show including the commercials is 1 hour, why don't you just watch the entire show without skipping the commercials? This way, when the show is over so is your workout.

Honey, of course I think your time is valuable, but it would be so much easier if you just did it my way.

Honey, why are you putting blankets on the sofa?

Married 36 years and still counting despite many dialogs like this. YMMV

Re: Fully Automatic Commercial Skip?

Well, we've been together for about 30 years - married for the last 25. With ReplayTV boxes in the house for 7 years, or so, the idea of voluntarily watching a commercial on TV is not in our vocabulary. Before that, we had VCRs with Commercial Advance. Even our 3 1/2 year-old grandchildren seem to understand that you watch TV on these pooled network servers and commercials are to skip over. Most of my grandchildren were born into a ReplayTV household. The 10-year-old talks about shows on the DVArchive TeraStation as if that's was how everybody did it. She doesn't seem to even look at the buttons on the ReplayTV remote. She just knows what to press by feel to navigate the network and get the show she wants to see.

Bye.
