ATI Cablecard Tuner available through Sony

I just saw this on Engadget:
Sony selling the ATI TV Wonder Cablecard Tuner

Does anyone know what kind of "special" drivers you would need? Now that there is a way to purchase these, can we look forward to support from Snapstream....?

Re: ATI Cablecard Tuner available through Sony

It can ONLY be sold with a new computer loaded with Vista Premium and Vista Ultimate. The licensing requirements from CableLabs are onerous and clearly intended to ensure that Microsoft has a monopoly.

If they had the resources, SS could easily challenge this in Europe, as MS just lost a MAJOR ruling about the cost of their development kits.

I'd like SS to support it. It is number 1 on my wish list.

It is also numbers 2 through 3,245.

The "special software" is the bios modification + Vista special edition included in those cablelabs certified systems, i.e. the PC which can already be sold with the tuner included. In other words, you still can't add the tuner to any existing/DIY system...

Re: ATI Cablecard Tuner available through Sony

Too bad about the software because Sony DOES apparently sell them now without a PC.

BTW: I don't think it is Microsoft's fault that the tuner can't be sold separately. I think this has everything to do with Cablelabs and the Cable companies.

Re: ATI Cablecard Tuner available through Sony

I try to keep my list manageable, so just 3,245 entries in it.

Re: ATI Cablecard Tuner available through Sony

There are vista activation hacks that mimick a different bios, so I wouldnt expect one to be impossible to make these work...

Yeah, but it sure would be nice to do what we want without having to go through a hack!
