Beyond TV Tweaks?

Hello. I have had my beyond TV for a while now. I was running on Windows XP SP2, but I have since downgraded to Windows 2000 because, in my experience, it is much more stable and much less resource intensive as an OS.

I am very interested in performance. I want things to work properly the first time, and for them to use as little resources as possable. The first thing I do with a new XP installation is turn off Themes, Indexing, and System Restore to save resources that would otherwise be used on irrelivant, memory hogging "features"

On my 2K install I have only disabled Indexing, as the other two are not even a part of the OS. I have installed everything I ususally use, and then installed beyond TV.

I am very happy with my BTV, as I have mentioned before, however, it still uses way too much processor for my liking. Does anyone know how to make BTV more light-weight?

Here are my specs if anyone is interested:
ECS P4M800Pro-M478 motherboard,
Intel P4 2.8GHz HT processor
768MB DDR RAM
Nvidia GeForce MX 4000 video card
Windows 2000
Beyond TV 4.6.1
Firefly Remote

Re: Beyond TV Tweaks?

Does your capture card have a hardware encoder like a pvr-150?

Re: Beyond TV Tweaks?

It is a Hauppeg PVR-150, sorry I didn't mention that.

Also: my windows 2000 installation was buggy, so I did a new install of XP.
Everything else is still the same (after a few hours of reinstalling software and drivers).

okay... I had to enable software rendering because of the video card I have in right now, any other ideas to boost efficiency and get BTV to be more lightweight a program?

Re: Beyond TV Tweaks?

BTV is resource intensive period, and you really can't affect that, so to counter you have to make sure you have a good enough system and then minimize extraneous applications and processes.

Your system should be fine for BTV with the exception of the MX4000 video card. You REALLY need to upgrade that to something newer, because software rendering really taxes the cpu and is totally unnecessary with all the cheap upgrades available to you. You are only doing Standard Definition TV so you don't have to get the latest and greatest. I'd say an Nvidia 5500 is the minimum, or an ATI 9660 (I picked up one off Ebay for $30 that I'm using for HDTV).

You might also consider adding some more memory, although based on memory usage I see on my server you probably already have enough.

Finally, if you are running AV then be sure to exclude your BTV folders. Some AV can really tax the system (Symantec) so consider using one like AVG or Avast that is cpu friendly. Eliminate as many other programs from system startup as you can.

Good luck,
Z
