BTV with USB2 Harddrives

Anyone use a USB 2.0 drive on their BTV machine. I am looking at extending my recording drive and am thinking of going USB as my main and or library harddrive. Anyone experience any issues with this kind of setup as far as recording or playback. Righ now I use all IDE, so that is my experience. I am really thinking USB becasue it would be a lot easier to unlug the drive and plug it in to another machine when I want to do some video manipulation..

Re: BTV with USB2 Harddrives

I have a Vantec Ethernet/USB NAS enclosure with an 500gb Seagate Hard Drive. I use it in USB mode mostly, lazy to setup it as NAS anyway... =)

Re: BTV with USB2 Harddrives

Im using a 250 GB USB drive for BTV. I have recorded 2 shows at once and watched another show at the same time with no issues.

I'm on it!

Thanks all.. this is good news..

Right now is a perfect example... I want to clean-up burn 8 show to a double layer dvd on a different computer and I have to wait 40 min for the files to transfer across my network. Would be a lot easier to just plug in the drive. Not to mention it's good excuse to new 500G drive.

Not to mention those things are so cheap these days. Everyone should have one sitting beside their computer with a daily backup scheduled.

Re: BTV with USB2 Harddrives

I had mine set to record directly to internal drive then showsqueezed to external USB 2.0 drive. I had random stuttering on playback when accessing the USB 2.0 drive. I was never able to resolve the issue. I did the usual optimization...disabled windows indexing, disabled anti virus to drive, made sure Ultra DMA was enabled, disabled system restore to drive, NTFS formatted, adjusted cluster size, regular defragging, etc....I was never able to resolve the issue. Decided to just buy a larger internal harddrive.

Re: BTV with USB2 Harddrives

All USB 2.0 enclosures are not the same. The chipset used can make a huge difference in performance. Also, be sure that your motherboard or USB card is 2.0. A lot of people only have USB 1.1 and don't realize it.
