Showsqueeze recommendations for HD OTA content

I am wondering if anyone could make recommendations on the detailed settings that folks use for DivX showsqueeze of HD OTA programs. I am trying to balance time to squeeze, file size and quality. I have an AMD 64 x2 system so have lots of CPU. But, a full quality squeeze for best quality appears to take about 3hrs or so. At some point, I won't be able to squeeze all my shows off hours.

I have two profiles I would like to create (and have started experimenting) -

- "Soap" programming - General Hospital (HD up-res), Grey's anatomy, etc. - quality doesn't make as much of a difference, but I don't want blurry, pixelating either.

- Programming I want best quality, but want to keep the size and time to generate as low as possible without compromising quality - Lost, CSI, etc.

Thanks for any help.

I use the "DivX Home Theater (High)" profile. I also have a X2 3800+ and it works nicely for me.

Just to make you aware, when you showsqueeze to Divx does NOT keep AC3. It converts it to MP3 (stereo).

Home Theatre High isn't an HD format, is it?

I use Divx HD High. About 1.8GB per hour.

I don't showsqueeze anything I am going to use anytime soon. Just leave it TP.

How long does it take you HD content to squeeze? What speed of computer do you use?

Re: Showsqueeze recommendations for HD OTA content

I hadn't noticed, but it really has gone up with 4.6.x. Takes about 1:30 for a 1:00 show, but two run at a time since it is an E6600 Core 2 Duo. It was running about 1/2 that with 4.5.

Can you tell me which DivX profile you use and the detailed settings? I would appreciate it. Thanks.

The Divx HD High profile. No changes from what BTV ships

Re: Showsqueeze recommendations for HD OTA content

I just compressed an episode of NUMB3RS (recorded from CBS OTA) using DiVX HD (High) and was easily able to see compression artifacts. I'm in the process of comparing this with WMV9 HD (High) which looks to produce about a little less than twice as large of files.

One of the things I noticed was that both of those video qualities convert the stream to 1280x720 (with 30 frames per second - isn't that 720i?). What I'd really like to be able to do is compress without changing the resolution. Is there a way to do that (e.g. ShowSqueeze choose the ouput resolution based on the input resolution)? I couldn't find a way.

If I want to create a new video quality to compress the 1080i material at, how do I set the Average Video Bitrate?

Thanks,
David
