Recording HD from cable box?

Ok, kind of a noob question, but is it possible to record HD off a cable box? if so, what tuner card can be used?

You maybe can do firewire connection or you may use the lower quality s-video to your video card. But if you want to do HD recordings, firewire is the way to go but only non-encrypted channels. do a search for firewire + cablebox

We currently are beta testing the HDHomerun and BTV 4.6.1 and have got it working. The setup is alittle more complex then the normal setup, but you can look into it in the Beta Forum.

Another thing to add, that snapstream doesn't support firewire recordings. but you might want to search for an add-on called BTV exterminator.

I just ordered an HDHomerun -- comes in a couple days !!.

The only problem is that it won't record any of the encrypted channels. I wish CableCard support was coming.

I am using the WinTV PVR 250 to record from a Cox digital cable box with Snapstream Beyond TV v. 4. The cable box provides HD programming. I recorded an HD program - and it seems to be fine except that the visible area on the screen is smaller than if I watch the same program directly from the cable box. The recording looks like a miniature letterbox version. Is there a way to correct that?

Thanks - but not sure why I would a firewire connection since the WinTV card records directly to the hard drive?

Firewire records in True HD. WinTV cards downsample to SD.

I learned a cool feature similar to what you're having a problem with, I don't know how to activate it in BTV, but I'm sure you can find it in HELP if you need to. On my Firefly choose the OPTIONS button and arrow up to where it can change to AUTO, LETTERBOX, PILLERBOX etc. Play with your settings there to fit the screen on your TV.
