Re: SATA - Pronunciation Amongst Beyondites
I can't help but think of that scene in Harry Potter where Hermione is lecturing Ron about how to pronounce a word for a spell.

Re: SATA - Pronunciation Amongst Beyondites
So, how do you pronounce 'data'?
I say it as day-tuh, just like the character's name in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Data, SATA, they rhyme. ![]() Z

Good point. I'll call him ... Sir from now on, Eh. And data is pronounced deh-tuh up here unless you are a brit and pronounce it dah-tah! FWIW, this thread is making me seriously consider junking my SATA drives and going back to IDE drives (how do you pronounce IDE anyway?) BB

When you use the word data to denote information that "data" is not capitalized and is a common noun. No one on Picards watch would ever (and never did I believe) call Commander Data "dah-ta". He was not "information", but rather a thing with a name as as such Data with a capital "D" and pronounced DAY not Dah as in data with a small "d". Now the problem with SATA is that it is really an acronym. SATA of course stands FOR "Serial Advanced Technology Attachment", and as for the proper pronunciation for SATA it is generally considered correct to use EITHER SAY-TA or SAH-TA. Usually when dealing with acronyms all bets are off. They don't really adhere to common English language rules. Grammar and proper pronunciation are a kind of hobby of mine, and although I claim no expertise, I have had numerous discussions about those things with some English department heads and professors long ago. One guy at Yale once told me an interesting theory he had regarding why so many of us mispronounce the word OFTEN. He told me that he could always tell if a person learned anything in English by the way they pronounced "often". If they did NOT make the "T" silent (as in off-en which IS the proper pronunciation) then he assumed it was a person who was trying to impress others with their grasp of English, not realizing that they were wrong. I thought this was rather funny myself. I hear TV and Radio news anchor men and women often mispronounce "often". One of the other most mispronounced words is "Long-lived". It is in reference to something having a long LIFE. Not a long LIVE. As such the proper pronunciation is long-lived where the "I" is pronounced like "eye". Thanks for bringing up some very old and fond memories for me (over 40 years ago)
