Speeding up BeyondTV startup
I find that even with BeyondTV already running in the taskbar, it takes upwards of 10 seconds to launch the viewer.
It's not a big deal, but I am thinking about upgrading my computer anyway, so I was wondering what piece of hardware is most responsible for this startup delay? I currently have a Athlon XP 3000+, 1GB DDR333 ram, and a fairly new hard-drive (not sure of all the specs, but it is 7200rpm). Would upgrading something make any difference to BeyondTV? If so, what change would make the most difference? |

Re: Speeding up BeyondTV startup
I would say that 10 seconds is good. I just loaded the viewer and it took 15 seconds on my AMD 64 3000+ with 7200rpm drive. Once I had a problem with my video driver and it was taking over a minute to load. How many times do you load BTV every day? Would your life be improved if BTV only took 5 seconds to load?

Re: Speeding up BeyondTV startup
Personally I don't really care if it takes 5 seconds or 30 seconds, but my girlfriend complains that the computer is too slow, and she wants to upgrade. The only programs she uses that don't launch in under 5 seconds are Photoshop and BeyondTV (and the bootup of Windows), so there's not really anything else that could be noticeably improved.
I agree that upgrading this system doesn't make much sense, given that she never plays high-end games. But it's her money and she wants the computer to run faster... so, what hardware should be upgraded first? |

Re: Speeding up BeyondTV startup
My main BTV Server opens and closes at about the same speed as yours does, and it pretty much has the same specs.
However I just tried it on another machine with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Dual Core Processor, and a 7200RPM Hard Drive. It only shaved about 3 seconds off of the loading times. I had Windows Task Manager open when I Opened BTV on the Dual Core machine, and the highest CPU Spike was only 35%. It looks to me like the bottleneck I have is my Hard Drive. You could always get two of the following: WD Raptor WD360ADFD 36.7GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drives, and set them up as RAID 0 (Stripe), and install your Operating System and Programs on it. Doing so will make your Operating System and Programs open faster. However, I don't know EXACTLY how much faster the $200 investment in a pair of those hard drives will make things, but I think it's a safe bet to assume it will be at least twice as fast. Before taking the plunge, make sure to check her Motherboard Manual to see if it supports SATA RAID 0.

Re: Speeding up BeyondTV startup
My computer has a Pentium 4 at 3Gh/s and 1G/O of ram, but BTV Viewscape still takes at least 10 secs to start. I don't find this excessive. What does irritate me is the desperate slowness of Web Admin operations, which I use for all scheduling.

Re: Speeding up BeyondTV startup
10 seconds? It's only 10 seconds!
BTW - open and close then open again. Only takes 5 seconds the 2nd time, once the data is in memory.

Re: Speeding up BeyondTV startup
I can launch to BTV viewscape in about 5 seconds if BTV server is already loaded. Loading the whole program takes about 10-15 seconds.

Re: Speeding up BeyondTV startup
I haven't seen that command in forever. Imagine running BTV on a Commodore 64? Darkk
