DVD plug-in on Link?

I havent seen this question asked yet. I have 2 BTV licences. One I use as BTV and the other I use as Link. If I get the DVD plugin can I use it on both machines? Or do I have to pick one or the other. Will it even work on BTV when using BTV in Link mode?

Ah, darn it. I guess I hadn't realized this, even after reading all the threads on the subject to date. That's a bit of a bummer -- since my BTV server is sitting in a dark corner of my unfinished basement, I was hoping to use the DVD burner on my HTPC to archive shows (which I do now, via a more labor-intensive process), as I'm not keen on trudging downstairs everytime I wanna archive a show.

Who knows -- maybe LINK-based burning could be enabled in a future release.

Re: DVD plug-in on Link?

I'd like to see the DVD burning plug-in for Link also. It is a much better solution for my setup.

I agree. I would rather use my Link machine.

Re: DVD plug-in on Link?

Wouldn't that involve first having to copy the video files to the Link machine then burning from there?

Or do you guys mean just initiating the burn process from the Link machine ON the server machine?

I would think the first option. The second option doesn't seem very practical if your server machine is in a "dark unfinished basement" and you have to go down and put in a blank dvd every so often.

I think option 1, but there really isn't a reason to move the files to the link PC (I've been burning most of my files on the server from network/unc drives). I would just like to have the ability to put a DVD burner in my link PC and burn directly on that burner from link

Re: DVD plug-in on Link?

I am not sure how it would work, but it would be nice to install a dvd burner in a link machine and be able to create the dvd in that machine.

I guess if it works from a network drive that would be alright. I've never tried burning like that. Thought it would mess up due to latency on the network or something similar

I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work over the network -- in my experience, LINK playback of HD video requires ~7-8mb/sec network bandwidth over fast ethernet, which is more than enough to feed a DVD burner throttled back to 4x (via AnyDVD, to reduce drive noise). And most DVD burners have some form of burn-proof cache/buffer management, which makes burning from network sources pretty reliable.

Ideally, the DVD burning plugin could be enabled or accessible from any BTV machine, server or link, so it was flexible enough for any configuration folks are using. If licensing fees somehow forced a 'single machine install' limitation, at least let the customer choose which machine the plugin resides on. I prefer to do my VideoRedo trimming on my den LINK PC, so being able to archive shows to DVD on the same machine would be extremely handy.

In a somewhat related aside, I find it humorous how many co-workers with TiVo or satellite provider PVRs ask me for burned copies of various shows in HDTV resolutions. I get and fulfill enough requests that I'm considering creating a little "Convenient, portable HD viewing experience provided by SnapStream Media -- www.snapstream.com" watermark to add to the recordings...

Re: DVD plug-in on Link?

if you don't want to copy the files individually locally, then let the user prepare an iso image on the server. They could then copy locally, burn remotely, or store online.
