HVR-950 and signal strength /tuning

Ok. Why does BTV go through all the hdtv channels, say it's recording, processing and then "Success!" ... and then give me a strength reading of zero.

Surely that's not a success - and indeed when I try watch it's apparantly too weak a signal to maintain playback.

Just to mess us up?

I encountered the same "success" and had the same question.
Some twisted logic there but at the end of the setup you do have the choice to exclude the channel. Do you know if it happens with all HD tuners or if happens with just this one? I only have the one HD tuner.

I noticed that too ( I have the HVR 950 as well).

I suppose it looks at any sort of signal strength as a "success"...of course, right now I'm using a small indoor "silverstar" antenna.

I think I may try putting a bigger one (maybe a Channel Master) in the attic over the holidays to see if I can pick up more.

Re: HVR-950 and signal strength /tuning

I just ordered a VHF antenna myself to receive those "success" 0 strength channels which in my case are in the VHF range. Seems the pre-existing attic antenna is UHF only.
Ironic since the only channel that is of interest to me is in the VHF range!

It's looking like a HVR950 problem only then?

Success in this case means it was able to talk to the tuner, run its 10 second capture and stop. After that point the recording gets analyzed and your signal strength calculated.

The failure cases here are where BTV cannot talk to the tuner or the capture fails for an unknown reason.

Re: HVR-950 and signal strength /tuning

Has nothing to do with the 950. All HD tuners work this way.

Classic case of developers thinking like developers not end users.
