Unhappy can't sign in to web admin

Hi, I hope this topic has not been covered before recently. I am at a remote computer and have tried to sign into web admin. It keeps coming up with site not found. I made sure the port was open in my firewall and downloaded microsoft's net framwork (?). I have asked tech support and they have not answered for weeks. Can anyone here give me a pointer or two? Much obliged, Yasmine

Re: can't sign in to web admin

The basics first:
You are sure you've got the correct WAN ip for the BTV server you are trying to get to? (I am assuming by "remote computer" you mean outside of your LAN. ie from te internet?)
You have setup your router to forward call on the BTV ports to the BTV machine?
Your BTV machine's firewall is open for the BTV ports?

Re: can't sign in to web admin

Hi, thanks so much for the reply (you might end up being more useful than tech support ). What is a wan ip and yes, remote computer is way outside of my lan. I have not setup my router to forward calls because I do not have a router but I have no problem getting into web admin from my own computer and internet connection so therefore I assume my home machine's firewall is open to btv ports. As I said before, the machine that I am working on away from home's firewall has been configured by me to have the port open. Much thanks, Yasmine

Re: can't sign in to web admin

keep in mind that your internet's IP address will likely change, and therefore no longer be valid at some point. I use www.dyndns.org to keep my IP addys updated. So, my Webadmin addy is something like http://xxxxxxx.dyndns.org:8129

The service redirects the request to my BTV server from any PC. Always works, it's free, and a great service.

Re: can't sign in to web admin

Thanks for your reply. I apologise but I am not sure what you are talking about. My understanding was that you could enter web admin from any computer, sign in with your user name and password, and be able to access your system. If it does not work that way, what does someone have to do to access the system? Much obliged, Yasmine

Re: can't sign in to web admin

It does work like that... But the ip of your computer may change and you don't seem to have configured the firewall of your BTV machine (the server). You mention having configured your remote machine (the client).

So at this stage: Check you server's firewall.
Make sure you know the ip of your server.

Once you got it working you'll need to find your machine even if the ip address changes.
I too use www.dyndns.org to keep my ip address updated and it is a good solution.

So your BTV server is connected directly to the Internet with no firewall? Not a good idea, if you are using XP then you probably are using the built in software firewall in windows. As others stated you need to know your IP address. Which as the others have mentioned can change regularly. I have cable Internet with Cox communications and my IP has only been changed once in the 4 or 5 years I have had it. They could change it every day if they wanted to, but luckily they don't. If you are accessing the web admin from the computer running BTV then you are not using your Internet connection.

Perhaps a little info on your setup would help. Since you don't have a router I assume you only have one computer. Also what type of Internet connection do you have, cable, DSL, I am going to assume you don't have dial-up.

Re: can't sign in to web admin

Thanks so much, everyone, for your imput. Yes, I have cable internet connection, no, I have not enabled the port from my own machine (server). My understanding is that my ip address changes everytime I log in or thereabouts. Therefore, unless you have something like this www.dyndns.org , the web admin system is next to useless. I cannot find out my ip address from a remote computer. Am I getting the correct picture? Much obliged, Yasmine

Well, it is not useless. If you have other PCs on your local network, they should be able to get to Web Admin. In any case, you do need to use a service like dyndns. I've been using it for a couple of years and it works great. I would install a router/firewall before opening any ports (and as others have said, install a firewall anyway)

I use www.no-ip.org since it is the same thing as dyndns and it's FREE!
