NVidia Pure Video Decoder - Why with ATI?

I haev seen people posting about how they are having problems using this decoder ith their ATI cards. Why are people doing this? According to NVidia's site they are not supported hardware by the decoder. So you won't get any real hardware decoding features.

http://www.nvidia.com/page/purevideo_support.html

It seems that most of the cards in question do not even support all the features of the decoder unless it is very high end. I am planning on getting something in the 7600+ set just so I have all the playback bonuses of the decoder. I guess I am just wondering why people are trying the decoder with ATI cards and saying "yeah it was no better for me than the SnapStream decoder..." Of course it didn't!

I tried it on my desktop machine with a 7900 and was running some HD video captures I recorded from the Spanish language channel (the only one I get with indoor antenna). It ran signifigantly smoother and crisper with the Pure Video decoder. I didn't bother checking with my ATI card for obvious reasons.

Even without the hardware acceleration, they are still good video decoders...

Are they really better than the SnapStream one if there is no hardware acceleration? I tried it on my ATI card (9800) and if anything I thought it was worse quality wise.

I was most amazed at how much better it made the HD content look. The images seemed smoother somehow on the G-Force with Pure Video.
