time to upgrage my card

Ok.. so I have a hauppauge wintv 878/9 pci card
it really sucks...

anyway...
I can record wmv files.... and play them on my xbox 360 so this works...

I want to get a newer card... on ebay there are cheapies out there...are they ok or should i go with a hauppauge pvr series?

any recommendations... also on a tight budget... aint we all..

my wife just had a kid
I got out of the emergency room due to a tonsill infection (18cc's drained)
tonsillectomy, uvula plastique, soft pallet removal

so our current doctor bills just came in.... $4500... OUCH!!!!!

one of the problems i have with this card is that you have to use your line in on your sound card... once I use my mic to play a pc game with the guys on tuesdays... it disables line in to use the mic.. so I forget to change it then I have movies with no sound....

TeleFragger - congrats on the kid. Sorry to hear about your tonsill infection and medical. That is pretty steep.

What cards are you looking at on Ebay?

I use the PVR 150 and 250.

Re: time to upgrage my card

TeleFragger - how are you playing WMV files on your 360? Are you streaming from an MCE machine? If so, is BTV on it and everything working properly?

Am having problems maintaining a connection to the 360 whilst running an MCE box with BTV on it.

yes... I have my xbox 360 on....
windows xp media center 2005 said it found a xbox....
I went to microsofts site and installed the software....
then my xbox 360 showed the media center screen.....

I connected the xbox 360 to a folder on my D: (D:\MyVids)
I forget how I did that.. been a while....

I use btv4 to record as wmv then my xbox just connect to the directory and play the movie.....

I am going to try mpeg soon as i think the 360 supports it...
I am going to play around with it some more soon... although I think i am going to rebuild my pc first.... I got a lot of crap on it....
i have both the media center receiver service and media center scheduler service on manual and not started.... all others are running.....
even got the weather plugin and a few other things in there...

Re: time to upgrage my card

Can you try something for me?

1. Start BeyondTV
2. Fire up your Xbox 360, connect to Media Center, and watch a video.
3. Stop the video but don't disconnect from Media Center.
4. Go to your PC and try to initiate Live TV in BTV. Can you watch/record at this point?

I am finding that when the Media Center Receiver Service is set to Manual and stopped, it fires up anyway when you connect via Xbox...preventing BeyondTV from doing any recording. Also, when you disconnect, it leaves the service running so you still can't do any recording.

Thanks!

Re: time to upgrage my card

My favorite, inexpensive tuner for BTV is the ATI 550 chipset cards (ATI chipset, but manufactured under several different brand names.) These are not too expensive and their picture quality is better than ANY Hauppauge card.

Re: time to upgrage my card

I'm not referring to ATI All In Wonder cards. Those are generally NOT good for BTV.

I'm referring to cards that have the ATI Theatre 550 Pro chipset. See this page of cards from Newegg with this chipset:
