Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

I'm having the same problem that many others have reported. Recorded video is split up into separate 2gb files.

The difference is, my file system is not FAT32 - I have NTFS so I don't understand why I would have this problem.

I am using the ATI Elite 550. At first I thought the problem was because of the PowerCinema software but I am experiencing the same thing using Beyond TV (trial version for now).

Can anyone help me understand why this would be happening?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

Are you saying the problem happens in Both programs?

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

Yes, both programs result in my caps being split into 2gb files (about 30-33 minutes worth of content in each).

Interesting. OK -- what OS -- what SP level are you at -- any updates get installed? Has this Always been the case -- or is it a new issue..

What are the hardware specs of the machine

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

Hey bnflaherty,

First off, thank you for such a super speedy reply. I really appreciate that.

Here is what I can tell you:

XP SP2
No recent updates that I know of (if there is somewhere I can look, just let me know)
I've got an AMD Athlon - I forget the processor speed but I'm pretty good juice-wise
1 GB RAM

I used to use a Leadtek TV2000XP - really old card. I never had a problem with capping. I used to record uncompressed avi clips as big as 17-20GB.

Edit: So, this is my first time using a cap card with an onboard mpg2 decoder.

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

any antivirus apps running? or any other apps (system related) recently installed? It sounds like something is running -- and causing the issue -- since its Not BTV related -- its a system issue.

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

I am running Norton Antivirus but auto-detect is disabled. Do you recommend I try capping something with Norton completely shut off and then report back?

I'm pretty sure the problem is not related to BeyondTV (although I do know it is a problem with PowerCinema) because I couldn't find anyone else with the same problem unless their file system was FAT32. But my luck with ATI support has been well ... unhelpful to say the least and I didn't know where else to turn!

Edit: Other than that, I never run any applications while I'm capping including IM, etc.

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

I would start by shuting down any extraneous apps -- and then see if the problem persists.

Are you using the elite tuner ie cable input or are you using an external tuner (cablebox) and svideo input to your Elite wonder.

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

I am using S-Video input into the dongle for the elite card. So, my cable is not directly linked to the cap card. I do this because right now, I can't scan all the channels I want to cap so I basically control what I am watching with my cable box.

My intention is to use Beyond TV with an IR Blaster but not until I can get things working right.

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

Update:

I used Virtual Dub to cap an uncompressed avi with my ATI elite card and I was able to capture a 12GB file with no problems. I used S-Video as the input.

So, I guess the problem has something to do with capturing using the onboard mpg2 chip. I'd really like to get this cap card working with Beyond TV so if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it.

Also, if anyone has any experience with using a Hauppauge (maybe the 350 model) & Beyond TV. I like the video output I'm getting with the ATI card but if another piece of hardware will solve my problems, I'm willing to switch.

The PVR-350s video out is not compatible with Beyond TV. You must use your video cards output.

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

Try hooking your coax cable directly to the card (ie bypass the STB) and using the tuner onboard the 550 and see if it will record a full show. I am thinking that it might be part of the DRM BS that is built into the chip or your particular STB that is impeding recordings via composite or svideo inputs. I will see if I can find a reference to this, I believe I saw it in some obscure forum. Something to do with disabiling the copying of macrovision protected VHS tapes.

What STB and cableco do you have?

BB

Edit: Even if it had something to do with a FAT 32 file system, the limit would be 4 GB in XP or Win 2K and 2 GB in Win 98.

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

Thanks Bigbird99. I'm going to try that and I'll report back.

I'm using Rogers Cable here in Toronto. I've got digital but not HDTV (yet). Explorer 2000 is the model of my box.

Rich_A - thanks for letting me know that the 350 is not compatible with Beyond TV.

Re: Recordings are Split - I have NTSF!

Only it's video out port. The FM Radio and tuner work fine.
