BTV failed to record "Lost" again

This is the second week in a row that BTV failed to record my wife's favorite program "Lost". It records the program right before Lost and right afterwards, same chan....can't remeber what they are, but I checked the program guide early evening since it had failed to record last week, and all were set to record. Both tuners are working ok. I checked the log after my wife settled down a little and it did not indicate that Lost was even on there around that time.
As far as I know, I have not made any changes to the settings in the last few weeks.
Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

You might want to install the plugin BTV Negociator and see why the recording was rejected. That plugin gives quite a bit more info on why some things fail and in the majority of cases (at least for me), there was a good reason for it.

Lost recorded fine for us.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

could this be the same thing I'ms eeing with hbo's sopranos? BTV sees that it is running later in the week, and despite being the top priority decides to record the later showing instead to maximise the recordings of other shows in earlier slots.

Take a look at the recording jobs and 'view upcoming episodes' of the lost job; you might see the selected recording at a repeated airing instead?

I hate this mechanism btw.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

or it could be something a silly as show overlaps. i had this problem with a bones/lost conflict. even though bones comes on at 8 and lost at 9 it repeatedly told me that they were conflicting. i then went into the recording settings and bones was padded 3 minutes past the end so this took up 3 minutes of lost's recording time. so i reset that and everything is fine now except last night.

near the end of the lost episode a windows service/prog shut down for no reason and forced windows to close and reboot i was unable to cancel it so my system shut down, rebooted, and all of lost that had recorded was gone.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

I had a similar problem with Boston Legal on Tuesday. No conflicts, no warnings, and nothing in the log. I have four tuners on the server (I validated that all are working), so it should have recorded all of these shows:

7:00 - 8:00 American Idol
8:00 - 9:00 The Unit
9:00 - 10:00 The Unit
9:00 - 10:00 Law & Order SVU
9:00 - 10:00 Boston Legal
Only Boston Legal wasn't recorded. I have 4 minutes of padding, but I only had four potential active recordings at 9:00 so it shouldn't have played into it.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

Could it be that "the others" are messing with your setup???

All kidding aside, try out BTV Negociator as MarcP suggested - that could help in troubleshooting. Also, keep an eye on the guide and whether it thinks it is a rerun or thinks there is another show later in the week that it will prioritize instead. These things can be tough to troubleshoot and sometimes just requires a lot of attention to upcoming shows before the airing and keeping an eye on the guide.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

I've had problems with the overlapping of the scheluded times.

ex: Show 1 is in the guide from 8:00 to 9:05 and show 2 starts at 9:00pm. If show 2 is higher priority, then show 1 isn't recorded.

Do networks do this on purpose to screw with people's DVRs? I've always been bothered by this. I remember a few years back, all of NBC primetime shows were 5-10 minutes off of the rest of the channels. I had to set up 2 VCRs to get all my shows taped properly

BTW - I didn't get Lost last night either, due to bad reception. So I will use my backup solution (Bit Torrent) tonight

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

I had my Lost record at 11-12:05 last night. I'm thinking that you had a higher priority show that comes on after Lost on another channel. This 5 minutes of extra time for Lost will cause a conflict unless it is your first priority show. I setup Lost to record on all channels (Recordings and Priorities->Lost->View and Edit Details) and it detected the overlap and recoreded on another channel when there wasn't a conflict. Too bad the other channel wasn't an HD channel! But the episode got recorded and that is all that matters!

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

I haven't had any problems with lost yet ( knock on wood ) and I have shows recording before and after Lost...but what I did see on last nights episodes was a thing about being able to download "Lost" episodes from ABC for free...so maybe you can get the episodes you missed from the network...haven't checked this out yet.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

I used to have a preset pad for all shows but experienced problems like the guys here are having. I removed all padding and now only add it on a per show basis where I might need it. For example the end of a sports event that might run over.

I also added an auxiliary program to check and reset my PC's clock every few hours. (atomtime) Since removing all pads and running a time check/set application I've never had a problem. All programs are fully recorded.

Question is ... do you "really" need to have a default pad set (for every show?)

If you say "yes" then maybe adding a third party PC Clock set utility might be a better solution. I know without the app. checking and resetting the time I found my PC clock to be off as much as 2 minutes within a 24 hour period. This was creating havoc with my BTV scheduling.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

http://dynamic.abc.go.com/streaming/landing checking it out now, it's a 500 x 283 window. Fairly decent quality. But I'm getting an occasional bandwidth warning here at work.

Need to poke around and try to download it rather than stream it

I have not had the chance to try yet, but we should be able to set this up in an .mcl and use it with BM and MCE.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

Lost is notorious for messing up because of the late finish time. There are a few shows like that. Make it top recording priority, and either adjust end time to end early or next show start time to start late, depending on what the SS guide tells you. If you are recording shows on the same channel, SS should not have had a problem, mainly because is lost ended 5 minutes late, the next show should have started 5 minutes late.

I did have some old setup recordings that gave me problems after upgrading to 4.1 or 4.2, I deleted those and made new recordings, gave them top priority, no problems since. Try that and then check upcoming recordings from time to time, see what happens.

Re: BTV failed to record "Lost" again

I have padding on my recordings that night and didn't have an issue. I also had recordings between 8 - 11pm all on the same channel though.

Of course, that is the whole point of the shows starting 1 to 5 minutes after the hour... Strip the commercial breaks and you still have the regular 40-44 minutes of actual show anyway. Some networks have stoped doing it after getting enough complaints, other are still doing it...
