choppy video?

Hi all, been searching the forums for the last couple hours, trying to find what settings I might want to look at to improve playback on "fast moving" programs like sports. It's barely noticable during normal shows, but with sports, it's almost unwatchable.

I'm using the latest nvidia decoder, with "automatic" deinterlacing, and hardware acceleration turned on. I don't really know what the other settings in it are for. Deinterlacing in BTV is set to "hardware" (using none makes the picture very fake-looking), and video renderer is set to "3d accelerated".

I'm using a AMD 64 3400+ CPU, with a x800 video card, and drivers as of about a month ago (not sure how to tell what version). The PC has 1gb of RAM and (2) 160gb SATA hard drives in a striped mirror, with lots of room.

I have recently fixed a problem with jittery video in recorded video after ff/rew, by updating the nvidia decoder, but the choppy/non-fluid video is still a problem.

I've gone through the different recording qualities, with no noticable difference, and settled on the 2gb/hour "better" setting. And am running BTV 4.1.0, but had this issue with 3.x as well.

Any ideas, please? Not being able to watch baseball is getting to be a drag

Thanks,
Jason

Re: choppy video?

After posting this, I was talking to a friend who has BTV and mentioned trying turning off 3D Acceleration, and using Overlay.

Made a huge difference! I'm not actually sure what 3D Acc. gets you, but hopefully this helps someone else, although I'm wondering if there's a better way to fix the issue, seeing as my hardware is somewhat higher-end.

FWIW, almost everybody (like >90% of users) have to turn off 3d hardware to get an acceptable picture. The only thing 3D does is to enable the transparent viewscape menu. If it works, it seems to be very system specific. Everyone just seems to accept this, I don't know why SS doesn't just can this "feature". Search the forum for "turn off 3D" and you will get 100's of hits.

Re: choppy video?

Thanks for the info on 3D or overlay. I was disappointed with the choppy motion during action scenes, and switching to overlay solved the problem perfectly. Kudos.
