Why can Orb do it but BTV can't?

Why can I stream live TV using Orb from my hardware encoding MPEG2 card but I can't with Snapstream? Is this feature in the works?

I wish snapstream would buy the Orb company and then promptly get rid of that horrible BTV Link...

btdown,

Could you please explain what streaming MPEG over Internet Explorer has to do with BTV Link? And also please explain what is so "horrible" about BTV Link? It works absolutely amazingly for me. I can view LiveTV from a hardware capture card (MPEG recording) just fine.

I'm very confused by your post.

BTVLink is incredible. It's the number 1 feature of BTV over MCE. I use it all over our house.

I get frustrated with blanket statements like 'horrible' without explanation.

the only problem i have with link is the version number matching (link must match the btv version) but even this is not a deal breaker. i just wish they would open it up some for those people who have btv 4 & 3.

Incredible---NOT. It may work fine in your house, but it does not work over the internet. Internet streaming is one of the biggest requested features, yet its the biggest area where their product is deficient, If they had Orb type capabilities, it would be the hands down top pvr software.

it is only deficient if it was designed for internet streaming which i don't think it was. now internet streaming might be A requested feature but not the most requested feature.

For those of us that use BTV link in the way it was designed, it is incredible. It was designed, and is sold as a solution for a home network:

Would it be great if it also streamed over the internet ? You bet it would, but that isn't how it currently works. If you want it to change, put in a tech support request.

Well, I wouldn't call Link horrible: I've never used it. But with BTV, I can't sit here at work and watch live TV from my computer at home. I can with Orb. And it's free and I set it up in 5 minutes using VNC over my cell phone...

I have no problems watching TV over the Internet on either a laptop/desktop, or even my Dell Axim whenever I'm away from home. You need to have a SW Encoder card to do it however, but it definately works!

That was my point. Orb does it with hardware encoders, so it ain't impossible.

Re: Why can Orb do it but BTV can't?

No, it's not impossible. Everything has a downside. Take a look at CPU utilization on your host PC while streaming video over the Internet with Orb. If you have ever used Link, look at CPU utilization on your BTV server while streaming via Link.

Not to be snide, but why would I look at/care about my CPU usage while I'm at work?

Re: Why can Orb do it but BTV can't?

BTV link is kick A....its only weakness IMO is inabilty to stream video outside of the home network....if this isn't addressed in an upgrade, SS will lose market share to those who do.

Re: Why can Orb do it but BTV can't?

Personally, I don't care to stream TV while at work. Why? Because I'm working at work!

If I traveled a lot, then Internet streaming would be very useful, but not a deal breaker for me. I'd just use Orb to stream my recordings. I could care less about streaming liveTV.
