Network Hard Drive for BTV

has anyone heard of using a network hard drive with BTV4? I would like to set up a carriage system that hooks into my network, where my shows will be saved. That way, I can buy several hard drives and place them in an external enclosure (I am running out of space in my PC and no more usb ports left).

Anyone heard of this, and how it might be set up?

Re: Network Hard Drive for BTV

you can do this.
when making a new video folder, just put the path to the network drive (easiest to do is browse to the proper folder in windows explorer and the copy and paste the path into the page on the web admin).

there is one thing to watch out for though.
although I'm not sure if this has been fixed in version 4 or not. In older versions, if you showsqueezed to a network drive, and you had lost connection to that drive.
BTV didn't realize that so it would showsqueeze to nothing, and then if it was set to delete the original it would, leaving you with no copy of the show.
This can also happen with external drives, if it get turned off or disconnected somehow.

have you thought about a USB hub, you can plug more things in, just be carefull, try to split up the hard drives to seperate ports on the computer. especially if you not usb2.

so for example

Code:
Bad
---Hub -- Drive
           -- Drive
           -- Drive
-- Mouse
-- Keyboard
------------------------------------------------
Better
--Hub -- Drive
          -- Mouse
          -- Keyboard
--Drive
--Drive

Get a Buffalo TeraStation Pro (http://www.buffalotech.com). It holds four SATA drives. With the current availability of 500GB drives you can get up to 2TB of storage. These NAS devices also have RAID capabilities. More than one TeraStation canbe connected to your network.

Re: Network Hard Drive for BTV

thanks! looks like an excellent setup. I am just wondering though. when I did the math, it seemed like it might be more cost effective to buy a separate server outright. ($260 x 4 + $1600 = $2640). But I will check it out. I can't believe just a few years ago the idea of 100 gb seemed large. now we are talking about 2 plus terrabytes!
