Installing Beyond TV Link

I tried many way to install it and everytime all seem ok but I don't habe the setup wizard. When the install end, it stat Beyond TV, which show a little menu
saying Sorry, but no Beyond TB servers could be found on the local network.

I checked in the dir. and the setup wizard executable is not there either.

What can I do to configire it properly? I have installed/de-installed numerous time without success.

Thanks.

Re: Installing Beyond TV Link

There isn't a setup wizard for Link. Are the server BTV machine and the Link machine on the same subnet of your home Lan?

Tell us more about your configuration.

Tom

Re: Installing Beyond TV Link

My BTV Server is connected to my home network through Wireless. My BTV Link client connects to the router directly through Cat5 UTP. Well, the question is this... BTV server and BTV link clients are sitting on different subnets. (It's for security concern, my router does this from default setup and cannot be configured) . Even I put the "/networkclient:[ip address]" parameter after BTVD3DShell command to point my BTV link to the BTV server's IP, I still got the same message as "Kaptain" mentioned.

My client machine can ping the server machine and I can see the shares on the server in client's explorer list. But I cannot use BTV link. Any suggestion? TIA!

Re: Installing Beyond TV Link

Ok, I just tried to install a wireless PCI card on my client's machine so that it can fall into the same subnet as BTV server locates. Well, the problem still exists. So it's not about "Different Subnet issue". What could be the cause?

Re: Installing Beyond TV Link

With your server wireless, you are probably going to have playback issues unless you are recording at a lower quality. Can you connect the server to the wired network ?

Have you tried adding an entry to the hosts file on the link PC for the BTV Server ?

Re: Installing Beyond TV Link

Hi, nanook105:

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I do have the entry in the hosts file. Whenever I need to check the server's shares I only need to type in \\mediacenter alias instead of the IP address.

For the current setup, it's not possible to hotwire my BTV server to my home LAN. I aware that the playback quality can be shaky but I have to live with it for now. I am planning to layout a gigabit eathernet network but haven't got time to kickoff the project. Anyway, it's like a beta testing stage for me. I have to make sure everything will work smoothly before I upgrade the infrastructure. Any idea why the BTV link failed on me?

Re: Installing Beyond TV Link

I don't believe that link will connect on a different subnet. Have you tried everything in the kb article ?

What would this entry be?

I initially had no problem connecting, and now, I can't seem to connect.

Before, I was recording to Shared Documents, and had sharing permission set to share across the network; I then started recording to an external hard drive, and set those permissions to share across the network as well, but I cannot revive BTV Link.

This is very frustrating.

Re: Installing Beyond TV Link

Do you have any internet security software installed on your btv client or server?

My trend installation blocked the btv link ssdp/upnp discovery traffic and the video until I added an exception for them. Check any event logs on your PC 'firewall' when you start btv link. If you're using the ip addr argument correctly, then the firewall should be the only thing in your way.

The other possibility since your router puts your wired and wireless nets on different subnets; is to check your firewall settings on that router to see if you are blocking traffic from one subnet to the other. Sometimes they'll default to only allowing each subnet to see outside but not each other. If the router does not automatically route between subnets - you may need to add a static route on your router or resort to port forwarding.

I have Windows OneCare Live installed.

The computer on which BTV is installed connects wirelessly to my router; the computer with BTV Link is hard-wired to the router.

Can you please break your answer down into somewhat more step-by-step directions for the less informed?

I followed these directions.

I had to set the UPnP service to automatic startup to ensure it would remain started on reboot. Otherwise, everything else seemed to check out as listed. Still no success.

The host file is in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC:

You need to add entries an an IP address Server Name format on the link. For Example:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.XX Server Name
