Minimum RAM Requirements

I have 256 MB of RAM memory right now and everything seems okay. Do I need 512 MB, or is 256 MB okay?

The answer is "It depends". Use task manager to see how much ram the system is actually using. If you are only using the PC for BTV the 256 should be fine. It's only really an issue if you are are tying to run a number of apps at the same time or something that is really ram hungry. But then ram is cheap these days...

Re: Minimum RAM Requirements

I'm just running BTV and don't expect to be running anything else on it. I would like to be able to stream video to other computers in the house, but I don't have a router on it, just a b adapter.

Re: Minimum RAM Requirements

256MB is the bare minimum for Windows XP! Your machine is heavily using the paging file, which reduces performance. Once your machine boots, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and click on the Performance tab. Examine the physical memory total and the Commit charge total. What are the numbers?
I strongly recommend at least 512MB RAM.

Re: Minimum RAM Requirements

When I first built my BTV Server box (mid-early last year), I started out with 256 megs of RAM, and everything "functioned" just fine, as with the OP's box. However, I got my hands on another 256 meg stick, tossed it in, and I noticed a night and day difference in responsiveness for the system. Note this is a dedicated BTV/<Unnamed competitor frontend> box... Thus, i'd say the extra 256megs would be worth the $20 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820161612) it'll cost you.
