Which MPEG Decoder do you use?
Lets have it, which one is the best. . .post your experiences. . . etc.
Oh yeah and if you have significant input I'll shamefully cross post as well. . . Picture Stuttering (during camera pan)

Re: Which MPEG Decoder do you use?
I always prefer overlay.
For every decoder I have ever used (Nero/Sonic/Intervideo/Nvidia/Elecard), Overlay has looked better on the TV and performed more reliably. I dont even try using VMR any more. Sure transparency adds a nice "ooh-aah" factor, but the novelty runs off quickly and I prefer good quality/reliablilty over fancy menu effects.

Re: Which MPEG Decoder do you use?
agreed. i really wish I could use VMR, but quality is not there. plus picture is too dark, so even if quality improves in future versions, I won't use it, bc I can't control color w/o controlling rest of computer screeen, which has fine color.

Re: Which MPEG Decoder do you use?
I'm pretty happy with VMR9 now, using the Nvidia Decoder. I used to have a sluggish guide overlay problem, but that was remedied by NOT running Exclusive Fullscreen mode. Oddly enough, I'm NOT getting tearing without it either!
I'm still having a bit of a problem with interlacing artifacts with HW deinterlacing, but that's an issue with the Dx9.0b quartz.dll, and will happen with any HW accelerated decoder. It's only evident from 2ft. away.

Re: Which MPEG Decoder do you use?
well i'm not using the old quartz.dll anymore b/c from what i know the latest builds of DirectX 9c are using the old one anyway (even if the version number is different). and besides that it didn't help my problem.
the artifacting for me is the same. . . its only noticable from up close, although LCDs tend to show this more than CRT or plasma screens. . . i also don't get any tearing. . . but my biggest issue is with what the jerkiness or perceived frame jump when the camera pans around the screen or with tickers. . . no matter what decoder i use i still have this issue and depending on what settings i use in the Nvidia decoder, i can minimize it. . . but if i burn my test mpeg to a dvd and play it in a regular old dvd player i don't see the issue. . . i just re-built my media center machine so I know its not a hardware or software conflict that i directly caused. . . but its really annoying me. . . i'm somewhat tempted to buy a new ATI 1800 XT card when they come out in november and see if that solves the problem. . . and i've also got a tech support issue in with Nvidia. . .

Re: Which MPEG Decoder do you use?
Ok, I exclusively use my ati decoder which lists as ati/cyberlink, but that's because I have an ati 7500 and that decoder is the only one that gives me perfect images in overlay mode (no tearing, no strobing, no artifacts.) Second best is the cyberlink, and I did not see enough differences with the nvida to comment. With the btv 3.7.4, I get the same quality with the ati decoder as I do with ATI MMC and exclusive display that media portal gave me. Earlier versions didn't do this. WHatever you guys changed, do not change it back.

nVidia all the way...Although when really *REALLY* drunk, I think the Intervideo codecs look good.
But it's very rare that I get drunk
