Multiple Tuner PC System
I would like to build a pc - from the ground up -- that accomplishes several things:
Record daily all my local TV newscasts (approx 6 hours a day per channel times 4 channels) Select segments from those newscasts, and Save the segments as a Windows Media Player files that can be recorded to a DVD and also emailed small enough so I don't crater anyone's inbox. Keep the recordings on a hard drive for a week before writing them to DVD for archiving then erasing them from the hard drive. My research has led me here and I'm thinking I can use Beyond TV 3.5 and some combination of Hauppage TV tuners. Caveats: I cannot have the PC connected to the internet. I will have four authorized cable drops to plug into the PC TV tuner cards. I currently have a stand-alone Philips DVDR-80. After reading the Medusa PVR setup on the SnapStream web site, I'm now totally confused after following links to white boxes, sound cards, video cards, etc. (Not a slam on the info, my mind is just overwhelmed by the technology). Would any of you be willing to suggest: an economical, yet bullet-proof "white box" PC system and all necessary components; suggest the proper combination of Hauppage tuner cards to record the four channels simultaneously; and tell me if the internet connection is a requirement or if I can use BTV without it? Appreciate any info you may be able to provide. Thanks. |

Re: Multiple Tuner PC System
You could achieve your needs with BTV. You will need additional tuner licenses after two tuners. So if you want four tuners you will need two additional tuner licenses. You can either get 4 PVR150's or 2 PVR500's. I saw an add for Circuit city for the PVR150 onsale for 59 dollars after rebate. If your going to record the same four channels for the same amount of time each night, you can setup a manual recording. Manual recordings don't require internet connection. You may need an initial internet connection to download your channel information from your cable provider. After that you just tell the software to record channel 4 6:00pm - 10:00pm everyday. Setup four individual manual recordings for each of the channels you want to record, set it to repeat everyday and your good to go. Are you looking to use you external DVD recorder to store the recorded content? If your looking to build your own box you may want to throw in a DVD burner. They're relatively inexpensive and this will give you the option to archive to DVD from within the BTV software.
