Recording playback problems

I am new here, and hopefully this has not been answered elsewhere... When I record in MPEG-2 Fair or better settings, the video doesn't come through on playback in BTV. I get a black screen with the audio clear as can bel. In ATI media player the video comes through as static while the audio is clear again. With Windows Media Player I have video and audio clear as can be. How do I get the file to playback through BTV? It is apparently a good recording, as it plays in WMP just fine. If I record in WMA format I can playback just fine through BTV, ATI, and WMP, but the quality is less. My system:

2.4a Intel Prescott processor
MSI PT800 mobo
512MB Corsair RAM
200GB Seagate HD
160GB Seagate HD
ATI AIW 9600 graphics card
Plextor PX-712A
