Screen Burn In ?

Hi,
I am considering getting a CRT Rear Projection screen but I am wondering about screen burn in ? If I leave BTV or beyond Media on the screen for too long can I get screen burn in from them ? ( I also want to use my xbox with it but I'm worried about that too ) .

Thanks In Advance
Jason

Ditto. I have a small living room with limited seating angle and no HighDef Programming, so I don't want to pay $1000 extra for a DLP or Plasma when I don't need the viewing angle. My major concern with CRT Projection is Burn-in. Has anyone had issues with this?

Thanks.

Make sure you have a good screensaver that kicks in ASAP. Also, try and watch as little content with black bars on the sides or top and bottom. Anything with an OSD that sits in the same place is bad too. Watch your contrast and brightness settings to. If you vary what is displayed you should be ok.

I figure, worse comes to worse, 3-4 years from now I will have screen burn in. I'll take the $1000 I saved from buying a crt instead of a plasma, and I'll go buy a plasma then, which in 4 years, should cost about $1000.

Plasma burn in just as bad as CRT . Just be carefull because burn in does not necessarily take years to take effect. Some pepole have gotten it after a few months.

Re: Screen Burn In ?

If you use it for TV viewing, you shouldn't have a problem. Using an S-video connector is the simple way...A VGA to DVI adapter will require you to get a setting where you don't have to worry about burn in too much.

If you use it for computing, then yes- burn in will be something to consider.

What size CRT RP TV??

Re: Screen Burn In ?

*anything* that has portions of the screen that do not change will cause burn-in sooner or later. This goes for xbox too, pretty much any game I've ever seen has things that are always in the same spot and are always displayed. CRTs in projection TVs are much worse than regular TVs as far as burn-in goes. And regular TVs are much worse than computer monitors. Computer monitors are more or less immune to burn-in these days. Screensavers are just eye candy now, as far as computer monitors go. But with projection CRTs, it doesn't take much to start down that burn-in road. This is why widescreen sets have various stretch modes when viewing 4:3 content, or use grey in the non-signal areas when displaying 4:3 in the middle of the 16:9 area. They burn-in relatively quickly compared to other CRTs, and the warnings they come with about using video game devices with them are pretty serious.

I've seen the set's that use grey instead of Black, what's that about? Why is Grey safer?

I'll have to do some research, but if burn-in really is as bad as you say, I may have to start considering DLPs again.

As for Plasma Burn-in, many plasma's now a day come with Video game settings, that from what I understand, reverse the image for 1/30 of a second every second, or something like that, to prevent burn in. Does anyone know of a similar technology for CRT RPs?

Re: Screen Burn In ?

well, if you're displaying a 4:3 image inset into a 16:9 screen, and left the sides black, then the center portion is going to get worn out a lot quicker than the sides that are just dark all the time. So if you use grey instead of no image at all then the sides should hopefully wear out roughly as quickly as the 4:3 image portion and you'll get even wear over the whole screen.

Re: Screen Burn In ?

Actually constant gray on the outside works just like an OSD in a video game. The trick is to be conscious of it and vary the content you are watching.
