Parental Controls Needed Direly...

Hi,

My 8 year old can navigate BTV menus faster than I can and her 4 year old sister is not too far behind. They love it that all their favorite shows that air while they are at school is waiting for them when they are back home. That being said, CSI, Kingdom Hospital, 6 feet under and various run of the mill horror shows on AXN sort dangerously close to what they want to see in the Recorded Shows menu...

I really would love to see Parental Controls implemented in BTV such that at the time I schedule a recording I can assign a sensitivity rating and therefore trigger password etc request each time someone wants to play it. I am sure implementation can me made simple & robust.

Please help me keep the sanity & innocence of my little children a little while longer. Thanks for listening.

Regards

I would love to have this feature as well. Is it on the drawing boards?

Re: Parental Controls Needed Direly...

Well...you COULD make it so that all of their shows are recorded to a folder just for them. Show your kids how to get to the "Cartoons" folder or whatever. Sure they could learn how to switch folders to see the horror films, but at least they won't select them by mistake.

You could even get a program to encript YOUR folder with password protection when your not around. That way if they try to select your folder it will be blocked. Of course this isn't as integrated as it could be, but it should work! It should be easy to give a folder Administrator status (Don't think this can work if your already running as administrator) so that the contents can't be accessed without a password. At least its easy with Linux lol. I've never tried with Windows.

Re: Parental Controls Needed Direly...

DodgeV83, All good suggestions and thanks but no thanks.

This is all about integration & ease of use. If I give in and start implementing patchy solutions for each and every need I have not met out the box the end result would not look much different than a Linux OpenSource project and the bottom line is right now I'd rather pay a commercial product to do it all for me.

I'd like to see that SS takes this up at some stage as most their competition seems to be on board with this need already. I have the feeling they don't have kids ;-)

Any word from SS on this? Should I post this elsewhere to get their attention? Thanks.

I've been asking for PIN protection for a while and it is high on the "todo" list I believe so there is hope, especially in the BTV / BM integration process.

Re: Parental Controls Needed Direly...

I'm pretty sure the guide already has TV ratings info for each show, so a V-chip feature should be pretty easy to impliment. Maybe someone could make a plugin...

Re: Parental Controls Needed Direly...

I don't want a V-Chip feature. That's pretty clever and to reliant on the guide data which is not uniformly good, especially outside the USA.
Also many of my video files are not BTV generated, so no guide info.

I want to hide my pron from prying eyes.

I believe PIN protect folders is the answer, and is also easier to install.

Pardon me, but -- LAME!!
I don't want someone else watching over my kids, but if there are more tools to HELP me "watch over my kids", then all the better. I cannot be everywhere and do everything, especially as they get older, but any help I have is just that, HELP.
This is a simple request, Snapstream has it in the pipeline, if you don't want it, don't use it.

Hi there. You probably don't think they should have metal detectors at the school gates either right?. Are you patting down each & every one of your kids buddies every day? Gotta watch over them personally you know...

As RichT nicely put it, if you don't want it don't use it...

I second the LAME!!!

How is having locked folders the same as haviing someone else wathing over our kids!? It's simply a way to prevent the very young from watching show that WE as individual parents deem not for them to watch, not someone else. Would you put adult books (not even talking p*rn) in your kids bookshelf and just tell them not to look at it. No you keep it seperate.
