More information on algorythm for deleting shows

It would be very helpful to understand the algorythm for deleting shows when you run out of space.....

does it find the oldest recording and start there...
does it go alphabetically...
does it find the largest...
how does multiple folders affect that

I had a football game (that I taped a couple weeks ago be deleted before almost everything, when I ran out of space)....I'm trying to figure out how SS decides which one to delete.

What I would expect is that it would start with the oldest recording (looking in all folders) and delete enough to meet the requirements of free space and then stop.

Thanks.

I would also like to know the answer to this question? Surprised that no one has responded? Maybe there is no process - it simply deletes randomly.

Well, if I recall if you have Norton Uninstall Protection on it never quits deleting Heard of people losing hundreds of shows that way.

Not sure to the answer though, with nearly 700GBs of shows, I don't have to delete stuff often .

it definately deletes the oldest stuff first.

"What I would expect is that it would start with the oldest recording (looking in all folders) and delete enough to meet the requirements of free space and then stop."

That seems to be how it works to me.

We could tell you, but we enjoy the suprise of loosing random shows.

Actually not sure what the logic is since I don't use it: Enough disk space for my needs. For me if you have to use it you either record too much or don't have enough HD capacity.

But I think it works by folder according to the rules for each folder. Then, from oldest file to most recent until enough space is created.

Um, no matter how much space you have, you will eventually need the expiration manager. Even 800GB of harddrive space will eventually need the expiration manager, unless you delete your shows on your own. Either way stuff is getting deleted. And once you get to that point where you have 799.9GB used space, the expiration manager will kick in FOR EVERY RECORDING to free up space.

I am 100% sure that it deletes the oldest stuff first. Just wait until your space runs out and you'll see what files get deleted first. Its not hard to notice.

"But I think it works by folder according to the rules for each folder. Then, from oldest file to most recent until enough space is created."

Sounds good to me

Never use it. Don't think I ever will.
All my recordings have a "max number of shows" so even with a month away I never come close to using all my HD. Still plenty of room for one off shows.

Once I've watched and/or squeezed and/or saved to CD I delete shows manually or the "max number" takes car of it. Space has never been a concern for our use.
I do have about 1500 CDs of shows/movies and growing!

I will never need this either. I have over a terabyte on each of my PVRs with 250GB on one and 320GB on the other dedicated for current recordings. Movies are edited (usually just removing padding) and moved to other hard drives on a weekly basis. Current TV shows are watched and deleted.

Re: More information on algorythm for deleting shows

I do use the expiration manager. I'm currently testing if the latest build is better. In my case, btw, the need to get rid of shows, stems from the fact that Link seems to be way more responsive with less shows. A week ago or so I reduced the average number of shows I keep around by 30%, and saw a significant improvement in speed.
My server may have something to with this, though.
