640x480

On my dedicated BTV box, I run at 640x480 on a 27" TV. Most of the profiles in both BTV and Hauppauge WinTV record at 720x480. Is there any benefit in recording 720 pixels across if I will always playback at 640? By what percentage can I reduce the bitrates if recording 640x480 instead of 720x480?

Re: 640x480

benefits:
-crisper, higher quality (if quality is set to capture that high)
-better to burn

cons:
-slower for system to run at higher res (on lower end systems), yours should be fine
-more room to watch/record initially

not sure about exact bitrates

-nate

I understand how this would be crisper in general (more pixels), but if it will always be displayed at 640x480, would it really look crisper if I was to record the extra pixels, just to compress them on playback???

As far as bitrates are concerned, 640/720=0.89

Would reducing the bitrates to 89% of the 720x480 bitrates be reasonable?

Re: 640x480

I don't think the Hauppauge 250 supports 640x480.

I believe it does. I tried it just a few days ago.

Here is a list of its specs.

I would guess that the videos recorded for you are actually in 720x480.

Re: 640x480

Just for the sake of demonstration, I just now tried a 640x480 profile, and Gspot has confirmed the product was 640x480. Moreover, TmpgEnc DVD Author complains that it is 640x480 when I try to import it.
