Question How can Dscaler 5 Decoders be used with 3.5

How can the Dscaler 5 MPEG2 decoder be used for playback in BTV 3.5? I've installed the decoder on my machine, but 3.5 doesn't see it, so it isn't offered as one of the decoder choices. If there a way to make 3.5 see this decoder?

yes! there is a way, your answer is on this forum - i saw it yesterday.

You have to edit a file (a beyond tv file, that is) to create a GUID entry for your new decoder, then it shows up in your selectable list. It's not something i've done before, as i said i saw it yesterday, reading about someone wanting to install the new Nvidia nvdvd thingy

what is the Dscaler 5 decoder? and why do you want to use it?

I'll help as much as i can.

-Paul.

Re: How can Dscaler 5 Decoders be used with 3.5

Dscaler 5 is an Sourceforge.Net project to create a high quality mpeg2 decoder for large screen home theaters. The current release is only at ALFA level, but many say it rivals NVIDIA's 4.0 decoder. I just wanted to play around with it to see if I like it. The Dscaler forum is here:
http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/phpBB/index.php

The file can be downloaded here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=123423

There is also discussion about this at AVSForum :

Re: How can Dscaler 5 Decoders be used with 3.5

I've just added Dscaler 5 to BTV's list. It performs quite well! Cpu usage with acceleration toggled was about 10-15% with overlay rendering. My only critique is that when you set the decoder to "bob" or "automatic," there is an annoying flicker and video tearing, much like you would see with VMR9 rendering. With the "weave" setting, the motion is smooth and there is no flicker, but of course, you can see combing. The picture is otherwise very sharp and clear.

I am going to continue to play around with it.

Re: How can Dscaler 5 Decoders be used with 3.5

Exit BTV. Find customsettings.xml. Open with notepad and append the following:

<Item>
<PropertyCollection>
<Property>
<Name>Guid</Name>
<Value>F8904F1F-0371-4471-8866-90E6281ABDB6</Value>
</Property>
<Property>
<Name>Filter Name</Name>
<Value>Dscaler Video Decoder</Value>
</Property>
<Property>
<Name>DMO</Name>
<Value>False</Value>
</Property>
<Property>
<Name>AllowSWDeinterlace</Name>
<Value>False</Value>
</Property>
</PropertyCollection>
</Item>

Restart BTV.

Cool Re: How can Dscaler 5 Decoders be used with 3.5

Thanks for the how to!! The decoders look pretty good on my system, except I can't change channels without the picture freezing. I'll play around some more. Even if I can't fix that, this is only an Alfa release and it looks pretty good.

I am getting picture freezing as well. The picture in Overlay mode is among, if not the best, that I've seen.

Re: How can Dscaler 5 Decoders be used with 3.5

Thanks for the tip, got these working.

These are better than some of the built in ones, but I'm seeing some mild stuttering (it looks almost like a low framerate) in overlay & 3D accelerated modes. This may be because of the BOB/WEAVE issue you mentioned. My question is, how the heck do you set BOB, WEAVE, or AUTO? I couldn't find anything in the registry, the help file says it's possible to set it, but offers NO EXPLANATION of how. I also tried searching the dscaler forum which was a waste of time.

I accessed it through ZoomPlayer by right clicking on the video screen, and left clicking "filter properties" on the menu pop-up. I don't know how to do it otherwise.

Re: How can Dscaler 5 Decoders be used with 3.5

On deinterlacing, here's a quote from the author, at

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...r&pagenumber=3

"...My current plan is to get this filter working well so that I can work on the processing filter which is where I'll add deinterlacing and film detection. At the moment I've got a deinterlacing filter half working but I haven't yet worked out the most efficent way of doing film detection in a way that will work well for both analog capture cards and mpeg. The film detection code will mostly be taken from DScaler although I hope to add code that takes hints from the flags, this should mean cadence breaks over chapter breaks are handled efficently.

At the moment the decoding filter is designed to be flag following in auto mode. There is no deinterlacing performed but the output should be in a form that enables VMR deinterlacing to work, normally this only works in the VMR windowed modes. When used with the overlay the image may bob in video mode. Any future processing will be performed in a seperate filter and will not be bundled in. PAL users should force weave for films, NTSC users should probably leave in auto mode. Users with 60Hz displays may get smoother motion with 3:2 smoothing off..."

Bilar,

Where did you find this value? I'm trying to learn how you created this insert.

The easiest way to find the GUIDs for DirectShow filters is using GraphEdit. It is a tool included with Microsoft's DirectX SDK.

Restart BTV.
I added this to the file as you've outlined. I started BTV but I have no choices to change the decoder...on what screen are you able to change the decoder? Is it in webadmin?
