New user, looking for some quick help RE: remote usage

Hey all...

I just got the trial version of BTV 3.5, and I have to say, I really love it. I've gotten everything working, except one thing.

Let me back up a sec, and say that I have a PC connected to a RCA DirecTV receiver. From the output of the Hauppauge PVR250, it goes through RCA cables to the TV. Now, the issue is this...

How do I start the BTV application using the remote? I remote control into the PC (no monitor/keyboard/mouse), but I know I can't start it that way. I want to be able to hit the power key on my Hauppauge remote, and for it to start the BTV viewscape. If I hit the RED button, it will start the WINTV application. I am just not savvy enough to put 2 and 2 together to fix this issue.

I've spent the past hour looking for the answers, but have been unable to come up with anything. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You could try Girder, or many people ditch the silver Hauppauge remote on favor of a snapstream firefly. This will do what you want, and much more. Any for real power junkies, there is a Girder plugin for firefly as well.

Thanks for the reply. I would like to not have to invest any more money on this, when the remote itself seems to work fine (albeit except for this one function). Thanks again.

No problem. In that case, Girder it is, then. I would see if someone (I'm sure they have somewhere) has already done this and could maybe send you their profile.

you can remap the keys on the Hauppage remote to do certain things inside of an application (say, for example, while running Beyond TV) and global things while not running an application. the file is irremote.ini and it's located in the C:/Windows directory.

first, shut down the Irremote application that's sitting in the notification area of your taskbar. then edit the irremote.ini file and look for a section near the top called "[Default]" -- each section of the file is broken up by the "[name]" usage. set up whatever button you want to launch Beyond TV (e.g. "RED={run(<path to your BeyondTV executable>)}" would launch Beyond TV with the red button).

for more information, check out Hauppague silver remote and BTV question and do a search on the forums for irremote.ini.

Re: New user, looking for some quick help RE: remote usage

The path is "C:\Program Files\SnapStream Media\Beyond TV 3\BTVD3DShell.exe" and it won't work, either with quotes, or without it.

What I did was put that directory in the PATH statement, and it seems to work. Thanks a ton, Sean. I knew there would be a way to do this, without using 3rd party software. Awesome!

Re: New user, looking for some quick help RE: remote usage

I realize this is an older topic, but just wanted to finish the answer to PeteyBoy23's question for the next person:

In order to use directories or filenames in the irremote.ini file, you have to use the short name (the one friendly with 8.3 notation).

For instance, my Beyond TV 3 directory is in E:\Beyond TV 3, so I set my GRNPower to:

GRNPOWER={run(e:\Beyond~1\BTVD3DShell.exe)}

In Windows 2000, the easiest way to find the short answer is to go to the cmd (Start->Run->cmd), change the directory you want to see the short name of and type "dir /X <partial name of dir*>. For example:

dir /X prog*

If you put the full name it will show you what's in the directory. Generally, Program Files comes up as Progra~1.

Re: New user, looking for some quick help RE: remote usage

All,

Very useful thread as I too wanted to know how to launch the BTV3 application with the hauppauge remote. I have 2 related questions

1. Is there anyway I can get the silver hauppauge remote or the RS 2117 remote to wakeup the PC when it's in standby mode? I currently have our HTPC inside our entertainment center. I would much rather be able to bring the PC out of standby with remote then having to push the power button on PC.

2. I started to play around with girder. After loading the hauppauge plugin, I was able to get girder to recognized IR codes sent by hauppauge remote. However, the performance of the remote software seemed to diminish. What I mean by this is that not all button presses on the silver remote seem to register now. For example, I can press vol+/- for 5 seconds and all button presses work. But for about 1-2 seconds after than, none of the vo+/- presses register. This repetition of working/not-working continues indefinitely.

Thanks for any help!

Re: New user, looking for some quick help RE: remote usage

I played around with girder a few months ago but am not using it now. I found that the silver hauppage remote seemed to send 2 sets of codes according to girder. If you look at the numbers when in testing mode you will see it changing back and forth.

I tried one of my other remotes and it always gave the same numbers in test mode as you would expect. As I like the form factor of the silver remote and had no specific need for girder, I gave it up. A quick search at the time showed this to be a known issue on the girder forums. I never looked for a solution however as I was just playing around with it.

Re: New user, looking for some quick help RE: remote usage

Hi there,

I'm a newbie to PVR and so far I like what i'm seeing from beyond TV.
I have the hauppauge 250 with the black remote. I understand what you guys are saying about editing the IRREMOTE File to start up beyond TV (i'm still using the trial version).
What I haven't been able to figure out is how to control the functions inside of beyond tv with the remote, such as navigating the main menu and changing channels etc.., I've searched through the forum but haven't found anything yet that I understand. Thanks for any help.

Search for irremote.ini as several of us have posted our configs that we like. But the basic navigation should work right out of the box. Or are you saying that your remote does nothing at all and no buttons do anything? Is the irremote program running? did you setup the IR reciever eye to the back of the 250 card?

Re: New user, looking for some quick help RE: remote usage

I appear to have gotten it working now. For some reason, the first time I installed beyond tv, it did not recognize the remote at all. But after I uninstalled and reinstaleld, it seems to be working fine. I did find the posts on editing the irremote file. Thanks and I must say I'm very impressed with beyond TV so far. I bought to replace the time warner DVR box and so far its doing the job just great.
