Slow Network Response Times and SP2

I upgraded a couple of my PCs to SP2 last weekend to make sure that there were no issues before upgrading my PVRs. I thought all was well, but today I noticed that exploring network shares on the PCs that were upgraded is significantly slower than my 2 PVRs (without sp2). Response times between the two PVRs is instantaneous, so it isn't a network issue

Has anyone else noticed this sluggish network behavior ?

Re: Slow Network Response Times and SP2

Thanks to Microsoft, this could be ANYTHING.

However, there's a place to start.

The default XP 2 firewall does NOT allow Port 139 (which is SMB traffic, also known as browsing) nor does it allow ICMPs including echo (commonly known as pings).

Try turning these services on. Or if they are internal only machines (and you do not browse the internet (with IE) with them or check email using Outlook Express) then feel free to disable the firewall and rely on the one at your router (hopefully you have one).

Re: Slow Network Response Times and SP2

Just to update. After I finished installing SP2 on all of my PCs, the network response time issues went away. Must have had something to do with the mixed environment. Great migration planning from MS

Re: Slow Network Response Times and SP2

if you slipstream XPSP2.exe --> WXP (sp1) and burn a new install/boot disk, then life is much easier wihen you have multiple machines to upgrade. cleaner registry - cleaner install - LESS bloat, etc

just google 'slipstream xpsp2' for steps. youll need isobuster to get boot .img
