Streaming to PocketPC 2002 WMP 8.5

I have seen numerous posts concerning issues streaming Recorded Content to a Pocket PC, but have been unable to solve my problem.

I have set the Streaming Quality to the IPAQ low setting and have been receiving the following error:

Windows Media Player cannot play this file."

I type my computer name and get the list of recorded shows.
I click on one of the shows download the cgi.asx file - open it and get the above error.

KB 1043 mentions installing Windows Media Player 6.4 (Tech Preview 2). The link is broken. Even if the link wasn't broken would installing an older version of Media Player on the Pocket PC solve the problem?

I am running the following on the Pocket PC.
The pocket PC is a ViewSonic V37 (400 mhz ) - very similar to the IPAQ
Pocket PC 2002
WMP 8.5 ( build 12177 )

streaming quality only applies when watching live tv over the web interface. snapstream does not live re-encode files for streaming, so if you want to view pre-recorded files on your ppc you need to transcode them into the format the device supports first and then you should be able to view them. also I dont belive the ppc media player can playback mpeg files so if you have a hardware encoder livetv will not function and you will definately have to transcode the recordings into wmv format at a res/bitrate the ppc media player supports

You are correct. I was mistaken.

This is what I just tried the following with the same results.

I recompressed a file to the IPAQ low setting. I then tried to view it via my Pocket PC with the same results as I mentioned above.

Anyone with WMP 8.5 Pocket PC Edition been able to stream a recorded video?

If so what recompression settings did you use.

If not a different recompression setting then how did you stream the content.

try recording a small (short) recording of like a min or two then transcoding and physically copying the file over to the ipaq and seeing if it plays that way, there might just be an issue with streaming, this will allow you to see if the media player can play it at all. Also are you transcoding into wmv 7/8/or 9?

Created the Sample video file.

recompressed it to IPAQ high and IPAQ STD.

Copied both to the Pocket PC and both played fine.

Both of these files give the same error when trying to stream the files.

I have tried, and had success streaming a file to the Pocket PC using Windows Media Encoder.

I do not think the issue is a bandwidth issue as I am trying all these tests in the Dock, plus Windows Media Encoder streams successfully.

you might want to try setting the streaming server to force tcp, or change it to download links instead, even with download links it is streaming over http rather than over the standard MMS protcol

I had the same issues with the Media Player in PPC 2002, and yes installing the older one did fix the problem... Also, upgrading to MW2003 also fixed the problem.

Also, what version of Snapstream are you using?

I am using the latest beta version 3.3 661.

When you say it works with MW2003 do you mean PPC 2003?
Do you know where I can get the older version of media player PPC? (the link in the KB article is broken)

Do the two version of WMP run at the same time?
I would prefer not to downgrade, but this functionality is pretty important.

They renamed the OS from PockePC <year> to Mobile Windows <year>. So yes, that was what I was refering to.

I'll have to look if I saved a copy of the older release, but no, I believe it is an either or thing. The PocketPC's don't have a real good way of handling multiple installs.

Thanks. If you can find it I would like to give it a try. I have been unable to find the older version on the web.

Perhaps someone from snapstream can fix the link in the KB article.

I couldn't possibly relate the number of hours i've been searching, and frustrated by this problem. I won't go into detail, but suffice to say, here it is.

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...-US/WMPPPC.exe

I have no idea how long the link is going to work, it's already a 3+ year old link and could be removed at any time, especially if MS notices the big sever hit on a very old file like this. I have a copy of it locally here, and the way-back machine stores a copy as well should it vanish, and can e-mail it out on request. I'll e-mail a copy of this thread, and the link to snap-stream and hopefully they'll update their links.

http://web.archive.org/web/200012042...lt.asp?pcode=3

PLEASE do not use this link until the download.microsoft.com link goes dead, we really appreciate the work archives.org does, and i'd hate to beat up their servers with file transfers.

This seems to be version 1 of their tech preview, but works fine, with version 2 only adding a very scant number of updates.

<closes book on personal week saga of searching>

And a big thanks to http://www.archive.org/ which I spent a long time searching links...

Paul
