Choice of input?

Obviously a newbie question, sorry if you're annoyed.

I use a Sattelite box to SVideo-in on my WinTV PCI card and I also use the analog cable for other local channels. So far, I can only get SS 3.1 to see one source or the other, but not in one single configuration.

1: Is it not possible to configure SS to have some channels coming from one input and other "channels" coming from the other? I'd like to create 'virtual' channel numbers and on each one, specify input source and frequency (if necessary).

2: Provided 1 (above) is possible, I'd also like to be able to run a background program upon changing the channel. This would be to run a script that will tell my RedRat 2 to change the channel on the sattelite tuner.

answer for question 2.

Why not get SS to change the channel for you? Use the SSgirderplugin & get SS to send events to girder, then get girder to send IR events to your redrat2

In fact I seem to remember reading that the SSgirdertuner was created for a redrat2.

I do the same thing. In SSs current config you can only set one input as the default. So whenever you set up a recording, it will be set to that input. You then have to go change that recording to use a differnt input. This is if you are using the EPG. IF setting up a manual recording you can set the input when you create the recording.

We are currently investigating methods of combining more than one video source with PVS. Right now because of the way the EPG is architected we can only have one channel lineup. At a time.

This is the first step in getting multiple tuner support in PVS.

I've already requested the svideo and composite to be selectable from by changing channels.

I'll see if I can push this through on the next version of PVS. This can be a good intermediate step.

I wouldn't mind being able to create fake channels as part of my snapstream line up that select svideo input instead of the tuner

So say, channel 900 is the VCR input via composite, channel 901 is svideo from my external dvd player ... etc

They can be 'unavailable' in the epg for all I care.

With you on this one. Although I would be more likely to set about 30 or so channels on the Composite input - to add 30 different sattelite stations and then have Girder change the channel as appropriate on my sattelite box.

May even have about 30 or more channels on the analog tv-tuner all tuned into the same frequency - since I use a digital cable settop box as well. I'll use the coax "cable-out" on the settop box and the composite out on the sattelite tuner. Seems to be the only way to use both external boxes and use the two inputs on my WinTV card.

So Girder will have to do all the channel changing through my RedRat2.. now we just need those multiple inputs enabled.

Thanks.

if your satalite box can give you your terrestrial stations as well then you can use the rat and girder plugin for ss and have the sat box tune everything for you all in one painless step (assuming you can get guide data that combines both terrestrial and satalite, and that the box does this)

Not in my case - digital settop box is for local Dutch stuff and my sattelite box is for everything that isn't Dutch.

Continuing on the multiple input story - I believe this should be do-able even with EPG.

Technically I should be able to run two different XMLTV downloads (for me, one would be from the Netherlands and one from the UK). From the XMLTV data, we should be able to specify a mapping that maps the data to the channels we set-up in SS.

My example: I would like to have channel 1-50 coming from the TV Tuner input and say 51-100 coming from SVideo (using ir to change channels on sattelite box).
So if we had a method of mapping the data, I should be able to get my Dutch and UK listings for the EPG.
