PVR 250 install not so smooth

Well I got it working but it was touch and go there for a bit. I can record at the DVD high res with only about 10% CPU usage. Very nice.

Problem 1
None of the recordings will play on my system, however I can transcode them to WMV and they play fine. Also if I move them over to my 1.3GHz system the MPEG will play fine. Well sort of, a two minute test recording that I did had a ghosting effect. I could see a very light duplicate of each image. It could have been the channel, a full length test is about to start. So I want to see if I see that again.

Problem 2

I could not run the setup wizard. It would not let me select a video input. If I just ignored it and went on I got error about the recording engine being unable to start. AFter many attempts I gave up and just started the program and changed the settings there. I could select the input no problem and it all seems to be working.

Problem 3

Maybe it's not a problem, but a question. Since I first thought the recordings were going to be useless, because of the video and audio stutter, I decided to try to make a wmv recording directly. I figured if I could do that, even if I can't get the MPEG to work now I can use WMV in the mean time. Well that was a bust, it will not start the recording engine if I set the default format to WMV. Also if you just change a recording to WMV from the default MPEG, it will record in MPEG anyway. That definitely seems like a bug.

For the first thing, make sure the MPEG codec works on the box where the recordings didn't play.

For the second, that seems common, I haven't noticed it since I always set my AIW 8500DV as the primary and then add the PVR later on.

For the third, this would make sense... The PVR card only records to MPEG... you would HAVE to transcode it later.

Well they did play on the system it was just unwatchable. From what I have gathered, the quality settings are really of no value. The board records at a default setting and it doesn't look like SS really changes it. So I believe its just that my PVS system just doesn't have the umph to play it. Even if I recorded it in fair quality I couldn't play it on my system. With my old card and using the software decoder I could record at the low MPEG qualities and play them.

I recorded a movie last night and the MPEG looks really good. When I play it on my 1.3Ghz system. I am in the process of burning it to DVD now, I am hoping there will be know audio sync issues.

Thumbs up

An update. The movie I burnt to DVD looked awesome. Very happy. Apparently the ghost I saw on the test recording was just something on that channel.
