Can't get past install of dot net 3.x

Tried to update existing 4.81 to 4.9 for hours and hours on a Vista Home Premium box. Get to "Installing dot net through 3.x - this could take minutes". Nothing, but nothing, gets pass that point. Tried to remove .dot net, reinstall under safe mode, followed SS KB article # 1535, other people complaining on Internet. Now have a boat anchor. Event Log shows a successful install of dot Net 3.x. Install locks up and freezes at the same point every time, trying to install dot net that's already there.

I beta tested on a PC that was identical to the target pc. Everything worked fine, but that had trouble with the installer as well, but not like this.

I did that and more. De-registered Winstaller, then re-registered. Go to step 14 this time, then it asked for a reboot.

It started back at Step 3 (install at dot Net) and hung. Thus ends 4 days.

I submitted a ticket. I'm guessing that their installer is on the fritz.

Anybody have any other ideas?
