Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

I have a question on that: I have about 20 or so VHS movies that I want to dub to H.264. VHS is officially dead, and I'd rather not have to buy another VCR just to watch a few old movies that I can't replace. (Some are literally irreplacable: no DVD's have been made of some of my movies.)

Does the HD-PVR flake out on Macrovision like a lot of other tuners do, or does it work okay when recording something that has Macrovision on it?

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

I haven't run into a situation where I've recorded anything with Macrovision. I was wondering about this when the HD-PVR first was announced as well, but never heard the answer on it. Maybe Brent knows something more on it?

Ok, just for the record, I found out today that I can only showsqueeze to divx when I enable intelligent quality detection, otherwise it stops responding, so you probably need to set this as default or manually enable this for any HD PVR recordings.

THANK YOU! So that's what it was!

I was getting indefinite hangs on any SD program if I tried to showsqueeze them to divx. I will flip the setting and see how it works out.

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

lsrracer, tscales, and others with lock-ups, do you have a fan installed over the encoder chip?

If you're using factory spec, I'm not surprised. I've looked at rev A, C, and E so far and none of them have proper ventilation. My Rev C with a small fan running off the internal 5V mounted on a custom lid with decent vents has yet to lock-up and it's been running for 10 days now with about 40 hours recorded. I let it go for 6 consecutive hours without issue.

That being said, it won't shock me if I find it locked up some time in the future but so far my money is on heat being the big killer for most people.

Yes it technically voids your warranty by removing the top but if you are careful you can make it invisible that you did that.

I think it sucks that consumers have to mod their own brand new hardware to make it stable but that's the reality it would seem.

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

I may have to check mine out and see how warm it's actually getting.

I so wish Snapstream would just implement FireWire control and recording, and let us stop screwing with this thing. I'd much rather have one cable going from the PC to the cable box than mess with the HD-PVR, the component cable, the USB cable, and the IR emitter...

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

But do stb's actually send decrypted hi-def shows out over firewire (without modification anyway?) Only option I saw for firewire recording was R5000 boxes.

firewire channel control exists today.........i use it with the hdpvr

as for firewire recording, you can do that today with fonceur's plug-in
(i used it for about a year, many years ago now).......since it only works for
unencrypted channels for which the hdhr is a much better solution anyway,
i don't see the point of firewire recording

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

I came home from a week vacation and was pleased to see no warning message in my system tray so all my shows recorded. YAY! Then I go to play one of them and it looks like utter garbage (as in peoples heads look like big blogs of colour). Watching Live TV does the same thing and is skipping more often than it was playing. Tried rerunning setup, restarting beyond tv, computer, and the HD PVR, no change. This was all on 4.8.2, as 4.9.0 never recorded once for me. So i tried to use 4.9.1, after 2-3 plays it no there is no capture device found. So 4.8.2 looks like poo, 4.9 and 4.9.1 both don't work. Pretty sure I've tried every Hauppauge driver available too. Woe is me.

How did you setup firewire control? What stb are you controlling? I was thinking of upgrading my second directv box and am curious if this would work.

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

MOT set top boxes for comcast and verizon fios both support firewire channel control..........not sure about directTV boxes (sorry)

this is a link

http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/show...0&postcount=22

also check out other forum threads on thegreenbutton.com (see above link)

good luck..........i'd never go back to IR control..........firewire has 99+
percent success rate (maybe 1 wrong channel recording a year)

update:
http://home.comcast.net/~timmmoore/firewire/readme.htm

this seems to imply that the channel change for directTV uses serial port, not firewire

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

I'd be happy just to change channels via the usb, without having to link two usb-serial converters and a null modem cable. I'm tempted to invest in a pcie card with two serials and a parallel, letting me control two sat boxes with a parallel for my lcd smartie. If I could go straight usb that saves me a lot of adapters.

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

I have been reading all of these post here about the hd-pvr's and the troubles a lot of you are having. I have 2 of these hooked up and running for about a month or so now and I have had only 1 lockup that I know of. But the problem I am having is that when I first hooked these up the ff, fr, and misc keys would not work when I was watching a record h264 show. So I read some where about using the arcsoft decoder for the playback of h264 files, So I installed that and for the most part my system works pretty well. But the problem I have now is when I watch a normal transport stream from an over the air recording I get a lot of pixeled green screens through out the show. What I don't understand is that # 1 I didn't have this problem until installing the hd-pvr arcsoft decoder. And # 2 in the web admin if I am looking correctly, it has the mpeg decoder listed and the h264 decoder listed. So does the h264 decoder also do the mpeg transport stream decoding as well? Or do I want to try a different decoder in the mpeg2 video decoder section?

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

i am trying the intelligent quality detection setting to see if this will let me showsqueeze to divx. i will let you know what happens, fingers crossed.

i also cant wait for snapstream to get their sh*t together and integrate the HD PVR into BTV. i am tired of them saying that BTV technically doesnt support the HD PVR...whats taking so long, myth tv and sage tv all support the HD PVR...hmmm

Re: Hauppauge HD-PVR support

well no luck with the intelligent quality option turned on. the task queue has it sitting on the first "SnapStream DivX Recompressor" screen with no progress in the progress bar. btw i am trying to compress a .ts file that was recorded from the HD PVR
