Email notifications - Test email hangs - Gmail

Anyone using gmail's smtp server for your email notifications?

I can't seem to get it working, I have it setup just like outlook express but when I try to "test email" it just hangs there.

All firewalls are disabled as well.

Yes. I use it for this, no problem.

Your smtp server should be

smtp.gmail.com:465

checkmark "sever uses username and pass"

User name should be your full gmail address. SMTP password is your gmail password.

both SSL and alternate SMTP should be set to "YES"

Are you using your own gmail address to send "to" and "from" on the test page?

"To" can be whatever you want. I use my work address so it emails my blackberry.

I just tried a test. using both the gmail account and a fake yahoo account in the "From". Both showed up at work as coming from the gmail account.

Does the web page say it successfully sent the email?


I don't remember if I had to do anything on my router. I'll look when I get home. I can take over the BTV machine from work but can't remember the router password at the moment. I don't think so since its outgoing only, but I'll look.

Oddly, when I click send to send the test email the BTV web interface totally hangs. I usually have to restart it from the HTPC itself.

Weird. Maybe I found a new bug.

I need to setup a generic email account with my ISP and test with that.

Came home and promptly fell asleep for an hour. I Must have been tired.

Anyway. Nothing special on the Router for this.

Just tried this with the "Alternate" option set to "No" and it does not work. Definitely needs to be set to "Yes".

Hopefully you figure it out. Sounds like you have things setup correctly.

I use Gmail with all the same settings and I had to do nothing special to get it to work.

By any chance are you running a beta version too? What version of BTV are you guys at?

I can't get it to work with these settings.

The SMTP server must be entered as smtp.gmail.com:587. If you leave off the port it does not work. It does work with the Alternate Port setting turned off. I have SSL turned on with my full Gmail address as the username.
