File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
Hello all,
I am separating this thread from the October one so as not to hijack the OP. I too am having this issue, but the behavior is weird and fairly consistent. So, here is what happens. My system was rock stable until this weekend. Now, after the system has sit for some time (I haven't timed it yet), if I attempt to watch a video, regardless of where or when the video was recorded, or what format the video is in (wmv, avi, or mpeg), I get the "path corrupt" message. Furthermore, if I try and watch live tv, I get a message stating "Sorry, but we were unable to start live tv. The tv feed may be disconnected or tuned to an invalid channel. Do you want to go to the snapstream.net program guide to select another channel?" It does not matter what channel I select (or by implication, which input). Incidentally, I get this message even when a program is recording and I try to watch that program from Live TV, watch it under Recorded Shows, or watch the other input, but the program *does* get recorded correctly. I have traced it to three possiblities: 1. I recently added a new input following SnapStream's instructions (http://snapstream.helpserve.com/inde...articleid=1163). This is a channel zero input for my DVD player. 2. I manually cut and pasted several files from my SnapStream recording directory and placed them on another drive, also monitored by SnapStream. 3. My Silverstone case has IMON, which suddenly crashed around the same time this happened. I am not sure if this is a cause, symptom, or red herring. I don't think it is a causal factor, however, as BTV does this even if I don't load IMON. (IMON is an application that generates messages for the OSD on the front of my case. I do not have it connected to BTV [i.e. no monitoring plugins, etc] in any way.) I did all three of these things since last Thursday (turkey day). I did #1 on Thursday, #2 on Friday or Saturday, and #3 happened yesterday. I believe this problem started (again, as I have had it before) Saturday night, so I am leaning to number 2 as the likely culprit. Could moving files around somehow screw up BTVs monitoring? Now, here's the last bit of weirdness. The log shows absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. No error messages, nothing that looks any different from logs when the application was working normally. If I exit Viewscape and restart it, everything works fine, although the sound is all the way down (but works normally). Note-I don't have to exit BTV and restart it, or the computer, just the UI. After a while, the problem rears its ugly little head again. Even if I do restart the computer or BTV, the problem comes back. My intuition tells me that this is library-related. Since it affects all files, happened after I did a cut and paste job, and goes away for awhile upon restart, I think this is a possible culprit (although why does it go away when I restart Viewscape?) If the apps ability to access files is somehow being obstructed, that would also explain why I can't watch Live TV (no access to the timeshifting buffer). It could be a tuner issue, but I have my doubts about that, as the tuner has nothing to do with watching recorded video. Steps I have taken (now or in the past) to try to resolve this: 1. Reinstall SnapStream - this is why I am working from a clean install right now. This problem occurred before. A clean reinstall seemed to fix it, but now it has popped back up. I would like to avoid going through the process again, especially as I still don't know what's causing it. 2. Disable other applications - Done. No effect. 3. Remove new input - Done. No effect. 4. Yell at machine - Done. Faint sound of snickering eminating from the PC speaker. 5. Restart Viewscape / BTV / computer - Done. Works for a while, but eventually stops. My system in a nutshell: GIGABYTE GA-MA69G-S3H AM2 AMD 690G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard GeIL 2GB DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Memory AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ Brisbane 2.1GHz Socket AM2 65W Processor Model Hauppage 150 w/ second input (both inputs have been used simultaneously without problem in previous build) Hauppage 250 (not currently in use) Using most recent drivers for all components. Running Windows MCE 2005 (receiver service not set up, and no conflict) A long post, I know, but I figure with more information I may be more likely to receive more effective suggestions! |

Re: File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
This is bizarre. I suddenly started having this problem, too, a few weeks ago, with an old BTV version that has been stable for over a year. It only seems to happen if there has been a recording made unattended during a hibernate/wake cycle.
Programs DO record properly. Logs show nothing wrong. Exiting BTV and restarting fixes it. I can't watch a show that is recording or any other show from Programs, but BTV has no problems recording shows. My suspicion has been that while BTV is recording it is locking permissions on the All Users folders such that my real user is no longer able to access them. But you did more testing than I have (which is almost none; I decided to live with it). The potential external factors in my situation: 1) Using a new monitor, 1440x900 instead of the original system one, which failed. I doubt that has anything to do with it, but the problem started within days after installing the new monitor. Nice bit of luck. 2) A couple of system freeze-ups (unrelated to BTV) where I had to restart with the Reset button at a time when BTV was loaded but inactive (just visible in the tray; not recording, Viewscape not open). I could imagine this might corrupt a data file, but it's happened a few other times without doing so. I reran the setup wizard, but it didn't help. I haven't tried uninstalling and reinstalling BTV. 3) Microsoft Update. I don't recall any relevant library files being updated, but like with the new monitor, this started happening shortly after an update. I know there's no great new ideas here, but thought I'd add my report to the list of things that didn't help. I'm still leaning toward some sort of folder permissions thing, because that's pretty much how it's behaving: BTV: "I'm busy with All Users, and I own it. There's nothing wrong. You just can't go there." I run BTV under an XP Administrator account (Run As...) while using my computer with a Limited user account. Has been working fine that way for ages.

It is grabbing more than all users, because it won't open recorded videos from any folder when the bug hits, and 2. It is grabbing them in such a way that the only app that is locked out is BTV. All my other apps work fine. Suggestions? Last edited by eightiesboi; 11-26-2007 at 05:54 PM. Reason: Added additional comments |

Re: File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
To explain why I thought this is bizarre, I haven't been very active on this forum in nearly two years. I dropped by today just to see what's going on. It wasn't to investigate this problem, because I figured it was most likely something messed up by the crashes. And yet, one of the first posts I saw was yours about the same error message I'd just started getting.
Another thing I had tried when it first started happening was to run chkdsk, but it reported no problems, so it wasn't a file system error or structurally corrupted data file. Tonight I went to Windows Update to check my update history. BTV relies on .NET and WMP, so a change in one of those could alter its behavior. I thought I'd remembered an update for .NET, but was wrong. There were about 3 for WMP in August and September, one having to do with "shortcuts" (unlikely), and one a security update (more interesting), but those are all too far back to be relevant to this new problem. Quote:
I agree, though, that your cut and paste seems a possible suspect, only because the other ones don't seem to be better suspects. You might try copying them in Windows Explorer to somewhere else, then deleting the originals from within the BTV interface, so it really knows it's supposed to get rid of them, then copy or move the files back into managed BTV folders so BTV can pick them up again. I think BTV used to be more easily confused by inter-drive moves than moves on the same drive, but since I haven't been here in years, that is very old information and not to be relied upon. When it says "File is corrupt", I at first thought it meant the video file, but it doesn't say that, so I suppose it could mean any file it's reading before starting to play a show, especially since the video files themselves are always fine. The path/filename no longer exists is sort of interesting because in my BTV logs the entries for the same show sometimes have varying capitalization. However, in Windows this shouldn't matter. The All Users/Documents folder goes by different names in different contexts: Documents, Shared Documents. But that's been true "forever"; why would it start making a difference suddenly in November 2007? I'm not at all in the habit of blaming anti-virus software for problems because it is very rarely the true cause of any problems, but for the record I'm using PC-cillin Internet Security 2007.

Re: File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
Hibernation isn't looking like a factor anymore. It happened again today when there had been no hibernate cycle.
I exited & restarted BTV, tried to play a recorded show, and got a new error: "Could not reset Direct 3D Device". Running DxDiag showed a "!" next to the d3d9d.dll file, saying it is "a debug version which will run slower than the final retail version", but the same message is there in dxdiag after a fresh system restart. Still thinking Windows Update is a possible suspect. I'm not really sure what apps use Direct3d other than BTV, how common its use is. I don't run any games. I wonder if it's possible for something to use D3D and then "leave it" in an unstable state. For example, Flash animations or something like that in web pages. Maybe there's a bad ad that started running recently on web pages, which is corrupting D3d, leaving it bad for the next app that uses it? Brainstorming, casting around for ideas...

Re: File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
Today, While BTV wasn't running (and hadn't been run since the last system reset), I copied a folder to Shared Documents. I then tried to delete some of the files in the folder, and got an access denied error. I manually refreshed the Windows Explorer window (F5), and was then allowed to delete the files.
This episode certainly had nothing to do with BTV. Windows is being slow or reluctant to relinquish permissions locks.

Okay, so my problem seems to have cleared up as mysteriously as it began. I don't know what fixed it, but I haven't had the problem recur since Monday.
Weird. |

I will just add that that problem appears from time to time on my system also.
I just delete the recording. And the problem goes away. (I blame the problem on the broadcaster, but I suspect it is BeyondTV.)

Re: File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
In the folder C:\Program Files\SnapStream Media\Beyond TV 3, I found two error report .RPT files that I think were from the very first time I got this error. The subsequent errors apparently haven't generated .RPT files. Here are the names and contents. They don't mean much to me except they indicate an access violation, but they might be more meaningful to someone else:

Then occurred again 3 hours later. I think the only change I made to BTV to accommodate the new monitor was to change exclusive full screen resolution mode from 1024x768 to 1440x900. I'm not sure if that setting is actually used for anything, though. I'm going to change it back to the old setting. I think I'm still using the ATI video card drivers that came with the computer. ATI has a "new" (pretty old) Catalyst driver set out, but Gateway hasn't officially supported it yet, and it hasn't been offered to me through Windows Update, either. This started happening before the November Windows Update, and the errors should have occurred sooner if the October update caused them, so Update is ruled out. -------- GeorgeH, 8 terabytes!

Re: File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
I noticed that a file called SS_BTV_DB.db, which appeared to contain the EPG program guide data, had a timestamp of 11/11 at 11:33 pm, between the two errors. That's odd because I don't use the EPG, and have it set not to update automatically, and it's blocked by a firewall from doing so. So tonight I also manually downloaded the EPG data, which changed the contents and timestamp on the file. The hope is that if that file was corrupt, the download will repair it.

Re: File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
Resolved here, too, probably...
I ran across some signs that the "event" of 11/11 9:03PM was more serious than indicated on the screen. My Admin user's XP profile adopted a new timestamp, 11/11 9:03PM (still worrying, but so far apparently ok), and starting at that time there have been weird errors in my Event Viewer (Server failed to start; System Restore found a corruption and deleted all restore points for a fresh start; Users unable to log in and logged in with "default" system credentials; User profile couldn't load). 11/11 9:03PM was the moment when I first tried to view the first show that had been recorded (7-9PM that night) after installing the new monitor, and when I got the first "file is corrupt..." error. Last night I uninstalled all the ATI drivers that had come with my Gateway system and that were being used with its FPD1830 monitor, and downloaded and installed the latest Catalyst set (11/21/2007) from ATI. That appears to have solved the problem. The Gateway-provided ATI drivers were probably customized, optimized, or perhaps even stripped down, for use with the system's FPD1830. They might have always "assumed" the FPD1830's existence, while the new ones do an auto-detect at startup and maybe other times such as resume from hibernate. The new Catalyst control panel is very nice. So far, everything seems ok.

Re: File is corrupt or the path <path/Filename> no longer exists - Not a codec issue
Declared it resolved too soon. It wasn't.
Something I should have noticed sooner: somehow, maybe during the 11/11 crash, my limited account user (as opposed to an Administrator account) became the owner of my BTV "shows" folder. Since BTV would have created the shows folder, and would have been running as an Administrator at the time, that is definitely an incorrect setting. Shows were still being recorded into that folder, with the Admin as the file owner, but I was getting the same old error when I tried to play them. In All Users, ownership shouldn't matter, or at least not to Windows Explorer. But there's also the .NET Framework and the BTV program itself that might check the ownership under some circumstances. I didn't change any settings in BTV. Instead, I exited BTV, logged in as the Admin, created a new shows1 folder, copied everything from shows into it, then deleted the shows folder and renamed shows1 to shows. That made Admin the owner of shows. Finally, that allowed recording a show and then viewing it with no errors. I suspect it's safe to say that this error is a fairly broad and generic one that might be caused by a number of different situations. Hopefully this thread can give others in the future ideas of places to look for the cause when they get this error. 2/2/2008 update Here's hoping this is the last update on these issues. Finally got them both to go away. File is corrupt...: After doing what was described above, I went through all upcoming and recurring shows in webadmin. Each show now showed two possible folders into which to record the show, something like shows (default) and shows They are the same folder, but each of the entries had somehow got switched to "shows". I changed each one to "shows(default)", and haven't had the "file is corrupt" error since. Direct3D errors and the message "Switching to default rasterizer, which runs very slowly...": this was apparently caused by a video driver problem related to the new monitor. I changed the command line invocation of BTV to this: "C:\Program Files\SnapStream Media\Beyond TV 3\BTVD3DShell.exe" /displaymode:windowed which causes BTV to always start up in windowed mode rather than fullscreen. As long as it starts up in windowed mode, it works fine. I can then use Alt+Enter to switch to fullscreen mode, and that works fine, too. It just can't handle starting up directly into fullscreen mode.
