Question Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

I have noticed that when I take the mpegs(cable) from the Hard drive and make a DVD from them they have more "jaggies" on the DVD player than when played through BTV. I don't reencode the videos in any way. Is there a solution to this or is just the way it is?

Re: Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

If you play them on a TV, there should be no jaggies, because the TV is designed to handled interlaced content like cable. When you play interlaced content on a computer, there are various tricks to eliminate the jaggies. It's possible that your DVD player does not do the right thing while BTV does. It might be simply a matter of choosing the right setting with the DVD player.

Does the DVD player play other DVDs for TV shows correctly?

Re: Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

It is a standalone Sony DVD player. All mpegs from the pvr150 seem to lose resolution when played back. My recording settings are something like 720X480? with 8000kbps. "Real" DVDs play fine in the machine.

Re: Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

Are you talking about using an application to author an actual DVD from the mpeg files, or just burning the mpegs straight to DVD and playing them as files on the DVD player?

If its the former, I'd suspect whatever DVD authoring software you're using. If it's the later, I'd suspect your player somehow doesn't play back mpeg files very well.

Re: Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

using an application to author them. AFAIK no re-encoding is done. I am using several progs.

pvastrumento to fix/demux
cuttermaran or mpegschnitt to cut the commercials
gui for dvd author to author the dvd

Re: Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

RXNelson,

I would suggest trying a different application to record to DVD, or, maybe one of the apps you are using prior to authoring is possibly introducing the "jaggies" you're talking about.

Try doing a recording that is smaller than 4.3 gig and then burning it to a dvd within your dvd author app and see if you get jaggies, or get something like Tsunami's DVD Author or another app.

I would suggest downloading a trial of VideoReDo and use that to fix/cut your commercials and then another app to make your DVD. See if it's any different.

Re: Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

My first step would be to eliminate anything that claims to "fix/demux" video.

Quite often any issues with video playback are not the result of a broken file but a broken player. "Fixing" the video more often than not means 'screwing it up to work with a given player"....

So I'd definitely concur with Don's suggestion. I use DVD author and it's worked well for me throughout the incarnations.

Re: Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

I used the trial of the TMPGEnc and still have the same issue. There seems to be alot of pixelation visible where two colors meet. Say that there is a white wall with a horizontal red stripe across it. Where the red and white meet there is a lot of I don't know what to call it....pixelation, jaggedness, grainyness? I guess it must be the mpeg. Also if you guys are using the TMPGEnc what do you use to get the video down to DVD standards? Thanks.

Re: Exporting to DVD manually => jaggies

I record my video at 720x480 29.97fps 6-9Mbps vbr. 224kbps audio.

Are you using a composite video source rather than svideo by any chance?
