Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

Arg.... Bought 2 more Sat Boxes a couple days ago. Activated them and setup BTV to use the new boxes late last night. Quick tests show 4 recordings all at the same time no problem.

4 Tuners. Yay.....

Checked recordings from today and noticed the 2 older 3100 boxes are fine and the 2 newer 4100 boxes both have a big Bell logo bouncing around the screen, telling you to "Press select to continue". Not good. Guess what got recorded. Yep, just a big Bell Logo.

Found another forum were someone mentions that he called bell and there was no way to turn it off.

But later posts in the same thread say to turn off the nightly updates and that will not cause this Screen Saver to kick in. I have my doubts.

OK, I've done that. I guess I'll know the results when I get back from work tomorrow.

Can anyone confirm that this will work? Or is there some other work around I need to be aware of.

Re: Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

Just got home.
Looks good. Both new 4100s are still showing picture and not the screen saver they had last night.

Checked the days recordings.
2 of them have the newer style banner that the 4100 shows when changing channels.

Logs show that both came from tuner 3 and number 4 was never used.
therefore the one 4100 has sat unused for more then 24 hours and no screen saver.

YES...... Looks good. Goto go to bed and I'll check again after work but things look good.

Re: Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

Seems the newer receivers are having the stupid screen savers to tick off HTPC users.

My Dish Network 322 receiver is doing the same thing. What I did was I programmed the "select" button as "enter" so MyBlaster would send this out after it sends the numbers. I was hoping it would send the "select' button first before sending the numbers but no way I can do that right now. Maybe something BTV can do in the future?

Also, check to see somewhere in your menus to turn the screen saver off or some other function that deals with program updates. Wish I have more info on the reciever you have.

Re: Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

I thinks its OK in my case. Note my second post. That was more then 24 hours and no Screen saver. I checked again before leaving for work and there was still no screen saver. If there is still none when I get home tonight around 9pm that will be a full 48 hours. I'll declare it a victory at that point.

So it looks like the soln for any Bell Expressvu people in Canada is to turn off the nightly updates even though thats not something you would think is linked to the receivers screen saver.

Re: Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

I have 1 4100 as well and I had the same problem as you did and fixed it the same way a few months back.

We are fine until they push an update on us that will have a screensaver mode with no way to disable it. They can only push an update though when the unit is turned off, so never turn your receivers off and you should be fine.

Re: Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

Thanks. Good to know that this fixed it. I never turn them off anyway but I suppose there could be a power outage. Regardless, this is good news.

Re: Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

Thanks Cal...appreciate it....
also...did you encounter any problems setting the IR blaster to work with the 4100? I wanna get the HVR-1600 from hauppauge and don't wanna have incompatibility issues before ordering from the US.....

Re: Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

Thanks for posting the solution Cal. This caught me out on a show that was set to record the other day at 11pm... so much for updates occuring only in the middle of the night Bell. Going away on vacation would certainly wreak havoc with DVR recordings. I'll just shut the receiver off once in a while and it can update itself when I want it to... LOL.

Re: Bell 4100 Screen Saver? How can I turn this off?

I'm home. Good thing I set an alarm on my Palm. I had forgot.

on the 4100.
Press

Menu.
6 - System Setup
1 - Installation
6 - Updates
Set to Disable and save.

Thats it.

With this disabled the screen saver never kicks in.

Oceanborn.
I don't use an IR blaster. I use one of the recievers that came with one of the pvr250 cards to recieve from my remote and the USB-UIRT to change channels on the 4 bell sat boxes. There were no issues with setup.

If you need help with the Bell IR sets see my post here.
Just a quick report. Smooth Hardware Upgrade.
