Boarder problem with WinTv-HVR 950 on HD channels only

Called into local CCity store pick up HVR 950. See one left on self, box damaged on one end. Do I take it or go 15 miles across town for an undamaged one….. Decide to take it. Get home, open box and no USB cable…. But in place is a second HVR 950! Guess someone on the Hauppauge line was doing the late shift. So that was the good news, though I do have to go out and buy two USB cables…..

All installed well. Added 950 to lineup with my Wintv500 and wintv150 (3 tuners on basic cable). Set the HVR950 on its own line up off the air.
When I watch a HDTV channel OTA with the HVR950 I have a big border around the whole picture, like 6 inches on my 50 inch HDTV. Have played with all the settings I can find with no luck. Switch to another channel that is not HDTV on the same card/lineup and it fills the whole screen.

I do see in tray at bottom “BDA TV Monitor” running which I don’t think I saw before installing this. It has no settings, just running or I can close it.

So anyone out there have their 950 running HDTV OTA and getting a full screen with BTV on their TV?

I did not install the other software from Hauppauge when I did my setup. I just put in card or this case plug into USB and then install drivers. Have never used the Win2000 etc that comes from Hauppauge, could I have missed something not installing their extras? The old 3 tuner setup has been working fine for months and this seems to be working in all area except filling the screen.

Thanks

Re: Boarder problem with WinTv-HVR 950 on HD channels only

I had to try different video card resolutions to get it to fill the entire screen

What resolution do you have your desktop set to? You need to be sure you're running a HD-supported resolution like 720p (1280x720) or 1080i (1920x1080).

Re: Boarder problem with WinTv-HVR 950 on HD channels only

Thanks guys
I tried several resolutions including 1280x720 and 1920x1080, no luck.

I run BTV wizard again and one thing I noticed during the setup was that the 'Test' page where it has a small screen and asks if can you see a picture and hear sound . Those same channels showed up in the middle with the same black boarder round them where as the other analogue ones fill the full small screen. Its like something is running and setting how the picture will display.

If I go to the guide while on the channel the guide fills the whole screen like it should. Select one of these strange channels and when you go back to it it is only taking 2/3 rd's screen.

Re: Boarder problem with WinTv-HVR 950 on HD channels only

Have you tried the aspect ratio settings in the options menu while watching a HD show?

What decoder are you using? If the nvidia purevideo, then ensure to go into the decoder settings (via system tray icon while playing a video) and select the "anamorphic raw" (or something like that) aspect setting.

The other thing you can try is to record an HD show (or at least part of one), then playback the file in something other than BTV (WMP, VLC, etc) and see how it's displayed.

Re: Boarder problem with WinTv-HVR 950 on HD channels only

I just installed mine and it filled the little screen.

Go into playback settings and do the last option (Adjust ....). Make sure your corners are set right in BTV.

Re: Boarder problem with WinTv-HVR 950 on HD channels only

Mother board is http://us.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_prod...YPE=LP&SITE=NA
TV is Samsung HL-S5087W
I have TV set on 16:9
Desktop is currently 1152 x 648 which is one of settings in MB manual. This seems to be fine along with a number of other settings if I so wish.
I was just watching “The Unit” on OTA HD channel and the pictures attached show you what happens. Movie is full screen, some adds are full screen or small and have a boarder all round. Some are like 4:3. If I set TV to wide/full then the smaller picture fills the whole screen but when I go to the menu the menu is wide and off the sides. Set TV back to 16:9 and BTV menu is perfect full screen.

I see this “BDA TV Monitor” thing in the tray. Could that be looking at what comes in and setting the sizes?

If I go to the analog channels off my WinTv PVR 150 and 500 then even though TV is set to 16:9 it is showing similar to 4:3 no matter what comes down Time Warner’s cable. I can make it ‘Wide and Fit’ but then menu once again is off the sides of screen.

Does anyone know what that “BDA TV Monitor” is doing? Because when I change channels sometimes for a second I see image fill whole screen the it jumps down to the 4:3 size.

This is NORMAL. The advertisers only create the commercials in SD, so they are transmitted with the borders. Watch CBS. Right before a commercial, you'll see the CBS logo shift left, then go out.

Re: Boarder problem with WinTv-HVR 950 on HD channels only

Ok does this mean we need to watch all tv in 4:3 on our large screen tv until a OTA 16:9 is shown, when our screen will then be filled?
The only way for me to watch the old standard TV is to go to' wide and fill' setting on TV. But then when we want to change channels the BTV guide is off each side of the screen.

I have attached a small quicktime clip of what happens when I change channels. You can see it goes out wide then drops back to 4:3. This appears to be done by BTV. Is there a setting in a xml file or something that is controlling this?

Why is the guide filling screen fine but in the background not the movie? A HDTV OTA program is fine and fills the screen. I understand they might put ads in there that are smaller, but what about when I change from OTA (HVR950) to Time Warner basic cable (WinTv150). Why won't BTV fill the screen? It appears to and then something seems to drop it back to 4:3

Once again this seems to just have happened since I installed the HVR950.

Quicktime movie of changing channels here

did you find a solution to this problem? I still have a "BDA TV Monitor" icon that always starts up in my taskbar, and i can't seem to uninstall it. Any advice?
thanks, lhs2miler

BDA TV Monitor uninstall

I just blogged about the uninstall of this annoying BDA TV Monitor issue...the answer to the uninstall is there.

Hope that helps!

I would be careful with that advice. HWCLEAR removes everything, including drivers for all of your hauppauge devices (would be a disaster for me - see my sig)

Re: BDA TV Monitor uninstall

True, but for those looking to get rid of all traces of the software and drivers (for the Hauppauge hardware) it's helpful. This thread is one of the top in a Google search for BDA TV Monitor Removal.

NO. HWCLEAR has nothing to do with BTV - it only uninstalls everything Hauppauge. Your post (and your hint) needs to be clearer and specifically state that if you never want to use this device again, run HWCLEAR. However, then next time that you install the drivers for that device it will just be installed again
