DSM-320 and uPNP

Anyone using the Dlink DSM-320 wireless media extender?
Does it work with the uPNP function of BTV 4.3 (i.e. without installing the software that comes with the unit)?

Re: DSM-320 and uPNP

I have been using the Dlink DSM-320 with BTV/BM for about 6 months now.
It has been a acceptable solution, but now without issues.

For the best results, I suggest doing the following:
- Use a wired network, because many of the DSM-320 have poor wireless reception. If you must use wireless, look for the wireless fix (mod) on the web.
- Use Tversity as your uPnP server software. It supports multiple media extenders and will do on-the-fly convertion of media that is incompatible with your media extender. (Warning: On-the-fly converstion can take a lot of CPU power.) www.tversity.com
- To watch movies, convert the ripped DVD vobs into a single file. This can be done by ripping to single vob or by full re-encode into mpeg2, divx, xvid, or mp4. I suggest using Nero Re-Encode to covert DVDs into mp4. (Dlink also suggests this solution.) It will make watching movies much easier.

Re: DSM-320 and uPNP

Thanks for the info.

So it will not work at all using the built-in uPNP function of BTV or it just works poorly?

Does it decode mp4 directly or via transcoding (ala hauppauge products)?

Re: DSM-320 and uPNP

Also, does it decode AC-3 or DTS 5.1 and send it out the digital audio outputs?

Re: DSM-320 and uPNP

Interesting...

From the DSM-320 FAQ:
Quote:
UPnP Compliant
The DSM-320 has passed INMPR and is compliant with the UPnP AV standard.

The DSM-320 may not connect to some UPnP AV devices due to the fact that they are not also INMPR compliant. If the DSM-320 is not connecting to other AV UPnP compliant devices check with the manufacturer of the other device to see if it supports INMPR.
It connects to Windows Media Connect and Norton MediaHome, so it HAS to be uPNP compliant.

Re: DSM-320 and uPNP

Thanks for this thread, you've already saved me a lot of time. :^)

Other questions are derived from a desire to install the apparently-needed TVersity UPnP server on the BTVServer PC itself:

1) Will installing TVersity UPnP server on the BTV server inhibit BTV Link operation in any way? (Doesn't this use UPnP?) I supposed I could install TVersity on a separate PC, but the BTVServer PC already has 'visibility' to all of the media/directories I would wish to share ...

2) Assuming that you can even do this, I guess from looking at BTVWebAdmin->Settings->Advance Settings->Miscellaneous Settings that the BTV UPnP Server is not launched by default, but do I also have to disable the streaming server in Streaming Server Settings?

Thanks!

Re: DSM-320 and uPNP

A different network player but FWIW here is my expereince.

I have a Linkplayer 2 with both the Linkplayer server software and UPNP enabled on my BTV box. Both show up and work on the Player. At the same time, I am running BTV Link on a different computer. No problems, or conflicts.

Re: DSM-320 and uPNP

Another hint:
Have BTV prompt Tversity to "refresh" the folder(s) where you store shows recrodered by BTV.

You can do this by setting up BTV's CustomPostProcessing feature.
See instructions in the knowledge base at:
http://snapstream.helpserve.com/inde...articleid=1254

From the CustomPostProcessing.xml template, change the following:
<Priority>Immediate</Priority>
<Value>c:\updatetversity.bat</Value>

updatetversity.bat
----------------------
@echo off
cd <tversity path where mshare exists>
mshare.exe <path to where you store your BTV recorded shows>

For some reason, mshare.exe only runs properly when executed from the folder where it resides, thus the bat file change directories to it first before executing the command to update tversity.
