Record part of one show and then switch to another

I'm writing about when you want to stop recording one show to start recording another.

Tonight's a good example: American Idol is 2 hours, but my wife and I also watch Scrubs.

American Idol runs 7pm to 9pm
Scrubs runs from 8pm to 830pm and 830pm to 9pm

I'd like to have it record the first hour of Idol and then switch to Scrubs.

When I tried to set it to record Scrubs, it made me cancel the American Idol recording completely.

Is there a way to work around this?

Not in a clean way (if you just have a single tuner). You could set up manual recordings instead, but then you would lose the guide information on the recording
