HDTV file size too big on FOX

When I record a show using my Avermedia HD A180, I noticed that the shows are about 8 gig per hour. This was fine until my friend pointed out that the shows on Fox and ABC are 720p and should only be 4 gigs or so. Is this correct? Could it be that my AverMedia is recording the sub channels also, so I'm recording both channels into one file?

Any ideas?

Yes all the sub channels are in the TS stream. You can pull out the other channels with 3rd party apps

Re: HDTV file size too big on FOX

Is there anyway to NOT record the sub channels? If I hide the sub channels in the Web interface, will it still record them or is this automatically recorded by the HDTV card?

With HD you aren't really "recording" like with SD. All you are doing is recieving the HD stream. Its all or nothing.

The ATSC stream is roughly 19mbit/s regardless of resolution or content. The stream is filled with null packets if the actual content doesn't take all 19mb/s. So you will see 8GB/hr on all channels when recording the stream.

Re: HDTV file size too big on FOX

Something said here confused me, so I wanna make sure I understand right. If I "record" a SD (480i or whatever) show from a digital channel, does it take the same amount of disc space as a show that's broadcast HD (720p or 1080i, etc)?

Re: HDTV file size too big on FOX

If its on a ATSC channel yes.

You can strip out the individual show with a 3rd party app like this:

It will be conciderably smaller disk space wise.

Re: HDTV file size too big on FOX

I often archive my digital recordings. Yes, all "digital" transport streams run at about 8 gb per hour. 480 720 and 1080 included.
