DIVX encoding has a serious issue if the framerate is not the same as the source file

I record as do most people on here at 29.97 hz from my cable service.

My portable media player plays files at 640x480 at 24hz max otherwise the sound gets slowly off from the video because the processor in it can't keep up. (The sound and video are synched fine as viewed from say BTV or Windows Media Player.

I have my ShowSqueeze set to do DIVX at a reasonable rate and frame size that my PMP can handle. However if I set it to 24 hz so that the PMP can keep up, all it does is extend the video out and does nothing to the sound. (So my 30 min video becomes 37:26 with no audio past 30min.) Obviously, I want it to drop every 1/6 frames or so to make the video portion stay 30 min long yet have a 24hz framerate.

Is this the expected behavior? The only way I know is to use an external converter (been doing that since BTV3) or set my main recordings to record at 24 hz to start with. This sucks.

Any ideas?

What problems will I run into if I set my initial recordings from the cable to encode at 24hz?

I won't go into what happens if you don't choose the same resolution as your original file.....

Okay,

With my PVR-250

Encoding at any rate other than 29.97 is a disaster. Any movement causes everything to go to hell with the jittering. So I'm stuck to again re-encoding externally (sigh) or praying their is another automated way to fix this.

its a well known issue that divx recoding has audio synch issues, i'm one complaining for weeks, FWIW...i downloaded divx trial off divx.com and had the same audio synch issues, they have no satisfactory answers for the problem either, i've used fair use wizard which uses xvid and it has no audio synch issues after recording movie after movie

I record all the time to divx with no sync issues - divx and xvid - it's luck, I think. Have you tried FU Wizard using Divx, btw?

Re: DIVX encoding has a serious issue if the framerate is not the same as the source

Got the problem here. Recorded a two hour long Biography: The Brady Bunch at Best Quality MPEG-2 and ShowSqueezed to DiVX - not the lowest quality but one or two notches up. I am assuming if you are going to ShowSqueeze and delete the original there is no reason to record the original at anything besides the best quality you can - no reason to give the DiVX conversion less material to work with.

Now my audio is out of sync and show is unwatchable.

If this is a known issue and has been out for some time, shouldn't SnapStream stop advertising this as a feature on their website?

Isn't it kind of immoral to tout a feature that doesn't work to sell your product?
