Smartskip doesn't seem to accurate.

Hi all!
I hope someone can help me figure this out. I have my smartskip set to generate right after a show records. But when I play the recorded show back the sections that suppose to show the locations of the commercials is not accurate. In fact some areas are not even found. Is there some tweaking I need to do to get this working properly? Or could it be a bug? I'm using BT4. Thanks!!

It's not a bug. SmartSkipping is an imprecise art relying on shows having a moment of reduced sound and screen activity between the show and the commercial. Sometimes shows don't provide that and SmartSkip doesn't recognize it as a chapter.

Re: Smartskip doesn't seem to accurate.

Thanks Drew! So basically what your saying is nothing can be down about this? And is this why sometime I see the Smartskip gaps showing up on movies also (becausee there must be pauses in the video?)

Thanks again!

Re: Smartskip doesn't seem to accurate.

There's nothing that users can do to impact SmartSkip beyond a global disable/enable of the feature.

You can disable SmartSkip for specific scheduled recordings -- like movies -- to prevent it from SmartSkipping them. I generally disable SmartSkipping for movies and other programs without commercials on a per-show basis. This saves CPU cycles.

I also notice that some stations/networks smartSkip works great and accurate, others not so good. Stations are catching on how smartSkip and other smartskip like programs work and change their formats. Remeber Stations don't like you NOT to watch commercials, that's how they make their money.

Re: Smartskip doesn't seem to accurate.

I can see how it can be difficult for smartskip to work. I was manually editing out commercials and I have seen the commercial fade right into the show so there is no way smartskip can do it.

Re: Smartskip doesn't seem to accurate.

Wouldn't there be better ways that smart skip could use? What if smartskip was capable of finding the stupid channel logo and based its chapters on that being there or not being there because it seems to not be there on commercials and there for the program.

I think that SmartSkip works pretty darned well, considering all the variables.

does smart skip even work for hdtv recordings? I've had it set to generate immediately after recording and i have yet to find file that when i play it back the smart skip chapters show up in the 'time-slider' during playback. any ideas?

True enough but even if it works darned well, as it does on certain shows and channels, it doesn't mean that better methods should not be developed.
