Channel line-up wrong - Comcast

Comcast moved some channels in my area and I can't get the channels displayed in BeyondTV to be accurate. I re-created the lineup, and re-ran the setup wizard, but BeyondTV still thinks that broadcast channel 2 is on cable 4 instead of it's new spot on cable 2 (Portland area).

I have a hunch this is because the Comcast changes haven't migrated up the food chain yet but I have no way of verifying it - Snapstream.net listings are wrong. But when I check listings with www.tvguide.com, their lineup is correct.

So how do I fix this in BTV, or is it out of my hands?

Re: Channel line-up wrong - Comcast

Comcast must be doing this all over (I've seen several posts on this over the last week). I don't think that you can do anything to fix this yourself - ss.net has to be correct before you can do the add new/delete old/run setup wizard dance. I believe that sending a tech support request is the best move at this point.

Re: Channel line-up wrong - Comcast

OK, thanks.

It's sad really - if TV Guide has their act together already, why not SS.net? I mean the change was effective only yesterday and already tvguide.com is correct so there must be some automated way of correcting ss.net. In this day and age there's just no excuse for stuff like this not being automated. Which reminds me of a feature request I wanted to submit about time syncronization so BTV can keep a PC's clock aligned to the cable company's clock the same way an old fashioned VCR does.

Re: Channel line-up wrong - Comcast

After waiting over a month for a corrected lineup to appear, I decided to fix the problem myself by selecting another lineup thats similar to the current, but correct. Next go back and Hide the channels that are incorrect or that you don't receive. In my case, I don't have a STB so I hide all the channels >99. Doing this online will save you time during the next BTV update.

Re: Channel line-up wrong - Comcast

My cable company (not Comcast) changed some channels around on July 1. It took a week for the changes to appear in both Yahoo TV and Snapstream.net. Once it updated, of course everything was easy. But for that week, I had to make some manual recordings just so I wouldn't miss any shows while waiting for the update.

Check Yahoo, if the listings are still incorrect there too, you'll just have to wait a little longer, unfortunately.

Thanks, you guys have been more helpful than "support".

The listings are wong on Yahoo too. I wonder how TV Guide has them right. Oh well. I guess they'll propogate eventually.

I don't know if that would be possible unless the capture card is capable of sending that data.
What operating system are you using?
Windows XP already has a syncronization feature built in that is very accurate, and there are many programs that can do this on other OSes( if you can find one without ad/spy/mal-ware).

Re: Channel line-up wrong - Comcast

It's in the XDS datastream carried on the closed caption stream (VBI data).

However it depends on the broadcaster to include it in the material and they have control over how accurate it is. If it's being relayed as-is from elsewhere, it may not be.

Re: Channel line-up wrong - Comcast

Is this the same data they use to set the time on the STB's?

Re: Channel line-up wrong - Comcast

I would doubt digital STBs would; there are better sources inside an MPEG2 stream that don't need so much decoding.

Analog boxes may though. I couldn't say for sure. I know my old UK VCR pulled the time out of the data in the blanking lines tho - might have been the line21 teletext info. Never really looked into it

It's within a few seconds of what I can get via NTP so it's reasonably accurate. It's been good enough for VCR accuracy for over a decade now...

Sure - you can use an NTP client, in fact, I do - but I'm thinking in terms of non-geeks. And face it, only us geeks use NTP clients. Only the *true* geeks use what comes with XP because only the nerdiest of geeks can figure it out - it's not suitable for J.Q. Public.

I want BTV to be useful to a much wider audience - because I'm selfish. I want it to grow and be much more popular and therefore grow in features and usefulness. To make the thing truly plug and play to a mass audience, then there is a big advantage in the non-technical Jonses knowing their media-center/DVR will always be within a few seconds of the cable company.

TiVo was a week late, too. Thank God there's nothing good on ABC these days.
