Scanning The Folder - Help!

I just upgraded to V3.7.2 and all semmed to go fine. However, when I add a new folder the "Pending Folder Additions" shows "Scanning the Folder". It's been doing this for a long time now and no luck. I tried using the setup wizard and it errored out that it couldn't add the folder.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Re: Scanning The Folder - Help!

After upgrading a perfectly working installation (3.5.3) to (3.7.2) I'm having the same problem. BTV lost the video folder and after trying to get it to create a new one, now all it does is show me that it's scanning folder and comes up wtih a BTV error that there are no configured video folders. Whats the deal, any sugguestions, anyone...?

Re: Scanning The Folder - Help!

I had the same problem. Created and added an empty folder, then moved everything into that. You might be able to force it in the XML file too. Scanning folders are pending, active ones are "LibraryFolder>".
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SnapStream\Beyond TV\LibraryFolders.xml

Hope this helps ease the upgrade pains.

I had exactly the same problem ("scanning" forever in the Web Admin). Got frustrated and did a full reinstall.

Re: Scanning The Folder - Help!

Maybe someone can confirm this but the problem seems to be when you have the folder scanned recursively. When I added my D:\ drive and had it scan all subfolders it hung on "Scanning....". When I added D:\ without recursive scanning it adds fine. Then I added D:\Movies\ without recursive scanning and it worked as well.

I guess this is one way around it. However It would suck if you have many subfolders.

Good luck.

Re: Scanning The Folder - Help!

The problem exists with Windows.

There is a hidden folder in the root of the drive called: System Volume Information

The ultimate fix for this is to disable System Restore for the particular drive...

The workaround is create a folder in the root of that drive and use it only..

The problem is that when sysrestore is active -- Windows changes the permissions on that folder so users can't access the files -- BTV gets stuck trying to get into it and hangs...

Re: Scanning The Folder - Help!

Thanks bnflaherty, that makes perfect sense + it fixed the problem - for me at least.

Thanks also HomeyFour, if bnflaherty's post hadn't solved my problem I'd have taken your advice and done that.

Re: Scanning The Folder - Help!

I am now experiencing this problem. I have disabled system restore on the specific drives and I have also made a folder in the root. No go. I have multiple nested folders, so not using the recursive option is not effective for me. In the previous versions of BTV, this problem didn't occur (i.e. if I added a new folder, all of the files in it were added to my library). What changed, and does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?

Scott

Lightbulb Re: Scanning The Folder - Help!

I found a fix to this problem, after you turn off system restore it still leaves that hidden folder.

So you need to

1) Enable showing of hidden system files
2) Uncheck simple file sharing in the same window (at the bottom)
3) Goto your the "System volume information" folder and click properties
4) Click security then click the "advanced" button
5) Check the box that starts with "Inherit from parent the permissions...."
6) Check the owner tab and check "Replace owner ......"
7) Click ok to anything that pops up.

Your done! That fixed all my adding folder problems

(You can go back and hide the system files and turn simple sharing back on now)

Re: Scanning The Folder - Help!

another easy way to do this is to open a command prompt and type:
cacls "C:\System Volume Information" /c /t /g everyone:F
(replacing C: with the appropriate drive letter)

and this on home edition is especially helpful since they dont allow you to access the security stuff on NTFS volumes in home unless your in safe mode as the admin user

The above command grants everyone full read/write access to the systemvol folder and all sub folders, wich is also useful because then virus scanners can actually scan in there and you can enjoy using system restore without having to worry about getting viruses stuck in there.
