recorded programs not appearing in "recorded programs" menu

I have BTV 3.5.2 on WinXP Pro with PVR-150 card. Just got the system set up not to long ago. I can record programming, and it goes into my designated folder as an MPG file. They are viewable. But, the 'recorded programs' list is NOT updated until I stop and restart the BTV agent.

I should note that my programs are on a Network Attached Storage device - the Linksys 250GB NAS unit with Gigabit network interface. I have zero problems with choppy video or missed frames. So, the NAS is keeping up just fine. I just want to know why my recorded shows are only appearing after a full restart of the BTV s/w.

Re: recorded programs not appearing in "recorded programs" menu

BTV keeps an internal list of the shows and updates this list periodically to make sure it still matches the files that are actually there.

The problem is BTV does not always seem to play well with network drives. How do you have the folder setup?

I ask because you might have more success if you go into the web admin and setup the video folder so it is pointing to \\servername\sharename rather than a mapped network drive.

That would explain why you're not getting updated, it's because they're on a network drive. BTV doesn't always like network drive situations mainly because of Windows, and I really don't blame it, because that's not the best place to capture to, over a network, regardless if the connection can handle it.

Re: recorded programs not appearing in "recorded programs" menu

Thanks for the info. The problem is my local PC hard drive only has 10GB free. The NAS has 160GB.

I changed the video folder from Z:\My TV to \\host\share\My TV and now it won't record to it. The error in the log is that a file name could not be created. I have verified the path to be correct. Does BTV accept UNC names?

Yes - I use UNC for all of my network folders

Re: recorded programs not appearing in "recorded programs" menu

Then I'm really confused. I have the correct UNC path name. In fact, it must be correct because when I restart BTV, it picks up all the programs in the folder.

Yet, when I try to record something, the error message in the log is:
Recorder failed: failed to generate filename in \\xxx\yyy\zzz (Title: XYZ)

Am I missing something else?

Re: recorded programs not appearing in "recorded programs" menu

I have the same problem with UNC and "failed to generate". This is on BTV 4.1. When I mapped a drive, it seemed to record, but the test show I recorded has not shown up in the show list even after waiting overnight.

With HD programs not being able to be showsqueezed, I have no way to move the programs over to NAS for long term storage. My NAS is fast enough to capture, and it also has 3/4 of a terrabyte for storage instead of only 150 MB.

Snapstream needs to allow showsqueezing for HD just for automated archiving if nothing else.

Re: recorded programs not appearing in "recorded programs" menu

Ok, this is a Infrant ReadyNAS hooked up on my network with a gigabit connection.

If I set up only a UNC path as a video folder and force recordings to go there, they fail with:

"Recorder failed: failed to generate filename in \\nas01\media\My Videos\Beyond TV\test"

If I use a mapped drive instead and set it as the default recording location, it at least generates the recording, but it never shows up in the list of recorded shows, even after a BTV restart (this is 4.1). However, if I turn around and make a UNC path video folder, it ends up showing the show name twice in the show list.

So it seems to do ok scanning with UNC, but will only record with mapped drives.

I know I've seen other posts from those who can record over the network, so what is the deal here?

EDIT: I tried restarting again and it picked up the recordings with no UNC NAS path in the video folder list. So the question is why don't the recordings show up and why does it choke on UNC for recording.
