Figured out Closed Captioning for my system
Ok, had a hell of a time figuring out how to get closed captions on my system, I think I have it down now (Thanks to Merrypig, without whom I wouldn't even be close) This works if you have a pvr-250 or equivalent hardware encoder.
1. Create a Dword called InsertCCInDVD (exact case) set to 1 in HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Globespa n\Parameters\ivac15\Driver 2. with btv closed, open settings.xml (docs and settings\allusers\application data\sanpstream\beyondtv...) and change the setting for TryCC from 0 to 1. 3. Install cyberlink powerdvd 4 or 5, or beyond media, you need the cyberlink decoder. In Snapstream, set playback to cyberlink decoder. 4. Install DirectVOBfilter (You can google for it, I took it out of klite codec pack, however, if you install everything from the klite codec pack it screws up ATI MMC media library navigation, so I only install this filter) 5. Install mpg2srt.exe in your movie directory or a subdirectory where you want to store movies with subtitles. Ok, when I want subtitles, I put my mpg file in the directory with the mpg2srt.exe file, and I rightclick the mpg file, then select "open with". I have set up mpg2srt as a program there by browsing for it, you only have to do that once. I select mpg2srt and it creates the files with subtitles. Now when I open that movie in Snapstream, Zoom player, beyond media, etc etc, it will play subtitles. If I do not want to watch subtitles, I can either change decoder or delete (rename or move) the subtitle files (there are two, either will work) That's it. I've tried to figure out how to do it without generating the files but could not figure it out despite bothering Merrypig more than I should. Ok, anyone finds a way to simplify this, I'd be much appreciated. |

Re: Figured out Closed Captioning for my system
I did this on a clean install, and I couldn't get anything to work untill I put in DirectVobFilter. Oh, forgot to mention above, you need to set Snapstream recording settings to DVD stream, not program stream to capture the CC's.
Merrypig, if you ever do a clean install, let me know how that works. The best I can guess is that you made some tiny but critical adjustment that lets btv play cc's without having to use mpg2srt and directvobfilter. |

Re: Figured out Closed Captioning for my system
Can someone hlep me to find out where to put "InsertCCInDVD" in the registry. I don't have "HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Globespa n\Parameters\ivac15\Driver" and I can't find "enableVIMProtection" in my registry. Thanks!

Re: Figured out Closed Captioning for my system
That is finallly getting easy. I already had the filters installed, so I made the registry and BTV change. Then reboot and I am done. CC's on live and recorded shows when viewing in Overlay using the Cyberlink decoders. I didn't have to install any of the other stuff.
The one question I have is on DVD stream verses Program stream. For my direct to DVD quality I normally used Program stream, will it make a difference for burning if I change it to DVD stream? KevG

![]() But it's really a moot point; captions won't work if it's not a dvd stream (afaik). That said I've burnt 200+ dvd's with a dvdstream format source without any issues.

Re: Figured out Closed Captioning for my system
Yes, I have a BTV250. I have tried many times and can't find those lines. I also followed the advices from this site http://www.cask-of-amontillado.com/htpc.html and still couldn't find them. Are there any other places I should check? Thanks!

Re: Figured out Closed Captioning for my system
The "BTV250" is not the same as a PVR250.
I'm not sure it has even remotely the same driver set/registry keys... Unfortunately I have no way to check. ![]() You could search for a string "I n s e r t C C i n D v d " in the .sys file of your btv250 drivers. (isn't it actually called pvr250BTV ?)

Re: Figured out Closed Captioning for my system

For the PVR250 drivers from hauppauge, there is usually a string ("InsertCCInDVD") in the hcwPVRP2.sys file. The string is encoded in 2 bytes per string, so you'll need a text editor or binary editor than can skip the 00 bytes between the letters in order to get a match. (IE I?n?s?e?r?t etc) If you find that key; then you at least have a hope that the driver supports the embedded caption info. You would still need to find where to install the key. To be honest if you don't have any of the ivac15\drivers or the other HKLM\... \class\... reg keys referred to in that website you linked to - then my bet is that the 250BTV drivers just don't support the captioning mode. That isn't entirely surprising since I thought the 250BTV was based on a different chipset to the PVR250 (ivac15/16) card and most likely has a completely different firmware/driver source. I've never heard of anyone using captions on the BTV variant or other roslyn cards. That said, someone told me that there was another non PVR250 card that DID support the captions in this way. Not sure if that was a roslyn, blackbird or what... chipset. I know this perhaps isn't what you want to hear but if captions are important to you _today_ then you might want to swap the btv card out for a PVR250. If you can wait a little.. just hang in there. Sooner or later captions will come .... even without this hack.

Can you run graphedit and do a check for the Line21 Decoder Filters in directshow; and see if they have the following GUID's Directshow->Line21 Decoder -> "@device:sw:{083863F1-70DE-11D0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}\{6E8D4A20-310C-11D0-B79A-00AA003767A7}" Directshow -> Line 21 Decoder 2 @device:sw:{083863F1-70DE-11D0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}\{E4206432-01A1-4BEE-B3E1-3702C8EDC574} Those are the two MS line21 decoders - which BTV _should_ be trying to hook up when you use the TryCC=1 setting. If either of those aren't present, or have a different GUID - the chances are something has replaced it with a different version or something is missing on your system.

Steps I took (1-3 from above): 1. 4. I made sure my default record quality was a DVD stream. 5. Used overlay instead of 3d rendering Works like a charm. Now all I need is a way to quickly switch between overlay and 3d as an on/off. Anybody know of a command line option? KevG

Thanks for the infirmation. I bought the whole bundle from Beyond and always thought WinTV-PVR-250BTV is the same thing as PVR-250. It looks like my card is not as good as yours. Do you know anything about vedio quality between these two cards? You said just waiting for a little bit, but if my card dose not support CC, will I still need to change to another card? Notica |
